About the Author
This is the Barrowman siblings' continuation of Torchwood's Captain Jack story. Carole is Director of Creative Studies in Writing and an English professor at Alverno College, WI. John is best known for his portrayal of Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who, Torchwood, and currently Malcolm Merlyn, The Dark Archer in Arrow.

Jack is Back!

I could not put this book down. Exodus Code moves Torchwood beyond Miracle Day into a new adventure of earth shattering consequence. The collaboration of siblings John and Carol Barrowman has produced one of the best books of the Torchwood series. John's intuitive insights into the psyche of Captain Jack Harkness combined with Carol's skill in dialog and narrative has produced an exciting, thoughtful, well-paced story that both reaches back in memory to previous characters and stories yet moves forward to embrace new ones. Although Jack as moved on from the wrenching trauma of Children of the Earth and Miracle Day, memories still haunt the immortal man, but the swagger and wit is back, I found the descriptions of the alien landscape and action in Peru visually stunning, and enjoyed another journey into the Welsh culture via Rys and Gwen. Torchwood signature traits of action, drama, and sly humor were all in the mix. Russell T Davies's Captain Jack Harkness is one of the most complex and best characters in modern science fiction, and the Barrowman book moves his story forward. I hope to see more of Jack in the future. Barrowmans, write on!!!

A balm for loyal Woodies

To start, I have read almost the entire catalog of available Torchwood novels. The Exodus Code is by far the best of the bunch. It's well thought out. The characters, Jack Harkness included, are all completely believable and alive on the pages. The plot is logical, if not a bit fantastical, next step after the events of Miracle Day.
But the thing that I am enjoying most about the book, is how the fans are treated in it. We get a Jack missing how things used to be with the Hub, the Team (yes, especially Ianto too), and all the gadgets/tools they had to work with. It's not handled just as him wanting all that to get the job done, though. There's a real feel of respect for what's been lost and even a moment of grief that I found healing a piece of my fan self I didn't realize I needed. That took me by surprise! Finally! After all this time, someone took a couple moments to take a deep breath about the destruction of everyone's beloved Torchwood.
The pace of the book is a fun one where it is just slow enough that you can put it down to take care of something, but then you're immediately back to it ASAP to keep going on the crazy adventure (I'm primarily reading this at work when I can, so it may be due to that, haha). The only cons I can think of is that the story does jump around quite a bit in the timeline of events. Which, duh, a Doctor Who spinoff is going to do, but to me it feels like the media would better fit the TV screen. Some things are clearer in the visual instead of the written I think.
All in all, read the book if you're a fan of the series but on the fence. I also dare anyone who's played Mass Effect NOT to read a certain character's dialog in EDI's voice. Have fun!!

Best of the Torchwood books!

I knew it was going to be good just because John Barrowman, who plays Jack Harkness on the TV series, helped his sister Carole write it. His insights into the characters and world of TW were invaluable. Not only did it live up to my expectations, it surpassed them!
I don't know how much of a hand John had in the rest of it, but Carole needs to write more! I love her style! Her knowledge of science and theory is fantastic!
I loved the weaving of the science, the Gaia Theory, and the connection of women with the earth, and how Jack's DNA is involved in the whole thing. I loved the mythology that was developed using those aspects. I loved the concept of the Helix Intelligences and how it was used to explain the sentience of the earth, Gaia, and the beginnings of life. Don't want to get into any more of that -wouldn't want to ruin the fun for those who haven't read it, yet.
The publisher set it a little pricey, but it's well worth it. Buy it. You won't put it down!
I think my favorite line in the story is: "Jack, I'm buying anything you're selling, darlin'. I'm from N'Orleans. I've seen plenty of weird shit in my day, too."
Now you WILL have to buy it and read it, just to find out what's behind that line.
