I enjoyed very much

I liked the title and I got the book.
I was trying to find meditations / relaxation topics. This was in tune to what I needed.
Beautifully written, relevant to any Christian (or one who is interested in Christianism) seeking something good to read.

I was familiar w/ Henri Nouwen's works prior to deciding on this particular book.
I like what and how he writes overall.

Another beautifully written book by Henri J Nouwen. This is a easy and quick read, which is nice for a change. I took it on a trip and was able to read it each evening and completed it in three days. Very insightful and moving.

Henri Nouwen explores the traditional devotion to the Sacred Heart; and, characteristically, addresses the Lord in a very personal, unpompous, and unforbidding tone of voice.

What is fascinating about this book is how it happened to get written: under the persistent encouragement and gentle prodding of Madame Pauline Vanier, whose son Jean was the founder of the L'Arche/Daybreak communities for the mentally challenged.

Henri Nouwen's attempt to get in touch with this aspect of Catholic devotion, we find praiseworthy. The simplicity and lucidity with which we writes, and the endearing gentleness of his approach: winsome and effective. These three prayers, written from the standpoint of fallibility and vulnerability, nonetheless display an appropriate confidence in God's prevailing mercy.

About the Author
Peter James Child started his writing career in the 1960's by contributing comedy lines to a USA show called 'FUNNYBIRDS' starring Goldie Hawn and Phyllis Diller. He went on to co-write a comedy series for the BBC entitled 'THE MOTORWAY MEN.' After many years working full time in the automotive paint industry as a technical representative he joined a Government department specialising in vehicle paint finishing. Later he was appointed as a Government Consultant to Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd. and then invited to join Aston Martin as the Quality Control Manager and Chief Test Driver and test drove every vehicle from Production. While he was at Aston Martin he wrote 3 technical books about vehicle paint, which are used in the automotive industry and Technical College's world wide, as well as two books on safe driving. He now concentrates on writing crime novels set in Victorian London and romantic titles. He held a private pilot's licence with a multi engine rating for many years and for relaxation ferried aircraft and pilots to various airfields around the UK.

Glad I bought the book but would have loved more text, although I appreciate the pictures. Again, I feel that South Side Puerto Ricans are not featured enough in informational texts about our people in this great city. There was a large south side Puerto Rican community! My father and many men chose to live south and battled every day to make the "American Dream" a reality for their children. The workers of US Steel lived on the southeast side, in Englewood, stretching all the way from what is now Hyde Park to Garfield Boulevard, from Union street to Western Ave. Where are our pictures and stories?

Bluegrass music draws its name from the band that Kentuckian Bill Monroe formed during the late 1930s and 1940s. Bill named his band Bill Monroe and The Blue Grass Boys to honor his home state. Eventually, the music these bands and others like them were playing came to be known as bluegrass music. Later, another Kentuckian, Ebo Walker, while playing with the Bowling Green-based bluegrass band, New Grass Revival, coined the phrase “newgrass” to describe the band’s progressive style of music. Other Kentuckians such as Bobby and Sonny Osborne, J. D. Crowe, Ricky Skaggs, and Dale Ann Bradley have become bluegrass stars. A photographic tribute to some of the pioneers and biggest names in bluegrass music is included in a new book about the genre that started right here in the commonwealth.



"Kentucky's Bluegrass Music," part of Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series, has just been published by James C. Claypool, professor emeritus at Northern Kentucky University.



Claypool, who speaks regularly for the Kentucky Humanities Council, researched and developed a talk about Kentucky's music history a few years ago, which prompted a curiosity about Bluegrass music. But it was about four years ago when Claypool was aboard the Delta Queen for a speaking engagement when he heard and met the bluegrass group the Steep Canyon Rangers, when he really turned into a fan.



The group, named Emerging Bluegrass Group of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2006, became fast friends with Claypool, who they now refer to as Ranger Jim.



"Their music is so good it will make your heart race," said Claypool. "And besides being great musicians, as I got to know them they introduced me to people with bluegrass music connections who were able to help me with this book."



The book, which includes about 200 photos, some dating back as early as 1918, were compiled from sources nationwide. Claypool said many have never before been seen in print.



By meeting with and obtaining photos from such big names in the business as J.D. Crowe, Charlie Sizemore and Dale Ann Bradley, Claypool amassed quite a collection.



His most prized photo is of Richard Burnett, the composer of "The Farewell Song," also known as "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow," which was used as the theme song to the movie "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"



"This photo of Burnett is one of three known to exist," said Claypool. "Burnett wrote the song, but Carter Stanley got the copyright, so Burnett did not make a dime off it."



Claypool, 71, who taught history at NKU for 32 years, says there are many things about Bluegrass music that make it enjoyable.



"It has a great harmony. It is played by masters of their instruments. The tempo and beat go at least three times as fast as country music, and the chorus is easily learned so you can always sing along."



Claypool has authored eight books and served as co-editor of "The Encyclopedia of Northern Kentucky," but this is his first book on music.



"This music just moves you," he said. "You can't help but tap your foot to it."

James C. Claypool has written, coauthored, or edited eight books. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. The photographs in this book were assembled from sources nationwide, and many of them have never before been seen in print.

Less Than Expected, Had Potential

Images of America/Arcadia Publishing is known for putting out photo-histories of small regions around the US, such as cities or suburbs, with each book covering a subject matter that made that region famous. In this case, the subject is bluegrass music, but the book covers a wider area, as in the entire state of Kentucky. This book could have been a lot better if more time was put into it. Many band photos chosen are of groups that have very little or no impact on the music scene, only that one or more of the band members is from KY.

A lot of the information is redundant and repetitive. For example, there are a number of photos showing The Osborne Brothers, and the captions say the same thing about the band under each different photo. This also holds true for multiple photos of Bill Monroe, Ricky Skaggs, and David "Stringbean" Akeman. The organization of chapters is what helps to create this redundancy. The author chose to go primarly chronologically. Thus, a photo of Sam Bush in the 1970s says about the same thing as one of him in the 1990s. It tends to be more irritating when the photos are near or next to each other, as in the case of a regional band The McLain Family. It is almost as if each chapter was edited by a different person and no one checked with anyone else.

There are many photos that are of poor quality, and not because of the age. They seem to be copies of copies of snaphsots taken with someone's Kodak Instamatic. Another low point is that a few photos have very little reason to be in the book. For example, there is a publicity shot of the Del McCoury Band. The caption only mentions the band members and that the band is one of the best out. It isn't until a few chapters later that there is a photo of fiddler Jason Carter from the DMB stating he is from KY.

One sad note about the choice of photos and information in the book is that the author mentions that KY native and New Grass Revivial bassist Ebo Walker was the person who coined the phrase "newgrass." Yet there is not one photo of him in the book. There are a number of photos avaialble of Ebo in one of his many bands (NGR, Bluegrass Alliance) from many archive and internet sources.

There are a few gems in this book, such as the photo of a very young Chris Thile (later of Nickel Creek) getting a private lesson from Bill Monroe. There is also some great coverage of bands/artists that don't usually get recognition, such as Pam Gadd and The New Coon Creek Girls. However, the low points outweigh the high points. There are no notes within the book to say how much experience the author has with bluegrass music, but someone with an armchair history knowledge will find a number of errors and awkward coverage. For someone from KY who has a lot of involvement with the bluegrass music scene in the state, this may be somewhat worthwhile. For everyone else, they should probably pass, as there are a number of other books on the market that provide more accurate and enjoyable information.

The early settlers of Lawrence Park laid the foundation for a caring community that today enthusiastically embraces school and community activities.

Disappointing...Thin on Substance...Over-priced

If you were hoping to find a treasure trove of rare archival photography, keep looking.

I opened this thin little book, hoping to see a lot of pictures of old time saloons. There are indeed a few photos of some old saloons, but the majority of the book is just filler material, consisting of old family photos, bar patrons and modern snapshots of people and places, which seem pointless and irrelevant to the subject.

The history of Irish pubs in Chicago deserves a much greater effort than the authors gave to this. The whole project seems to have been thrown together by assigned committees, which gives it the Hodge-podgy feel of a high school yearbook.

Considering that there are tons of archival images available on the internet - including postcards, matchbooks, business cards, menus and photos - anyone with even a little motivation could easily compile a much more worthy treatment of such an historically significant institution as the Irish pubs and saloons of Chicago.

This book is a must read. The history gathered is presented in a easy to read, enjoyable manner. The pictures in the book are amazing! So many wonderful, historical shots - it helps you feel like you are really there in the pub. Irish from all over need to take the time to read this - they will enjoy every page!

History conceived as medicine for Western imperialists and Hindus

As a relative newcomer to the history of India, I found this a decent introduction to the issues and approaches to them that have shaped modern Indian political life. The two central themes that emerge are first, the nature of colonial rule (under Britain, of course--the term is never used of Muslim masters, nor is "imperialism") and the process of separation from it, and second, the problems involved in intercommunal and inter-caste relationships in the context of subsequent Indian democracy.

I had been looking in particular for a sense of how the conversation between Muslims and Hindus about India's past goes, if a "conversation" can be said to exist on the subject: how do Muslims justify their period(s) of rule to their former subjects? How do Hindus as Hindus make sense of their past as subjects of Muslim rule? The extreme positions on both sides are easily discovered, but these extremes don't really meet in conversation.

I was disappointed, though, in this respect: the Metcalfs do not so much convey a sense of the course of this conversation as take one side of it. It is as though they conceive of their history as a kind of therapy against Hindu distrust of Islam: in this treatment, Islam changed nothing, was never involved as an actor, was never alien to India, an influence from "outside." The problems begin only when the Brits and later, Hindus, attempt to conceptualize the communal structure of the subcontinent in too-rigid terms. Mughals and other Muslim dynasties never, apparently, tried to conceptualize anything (let alone by means of Islamic categories!), or if they did, kept their categories loose and supple (well-known characteristics of Islamic thought, of course), for no ill effects are shown to follow, for anybody except, perhaps, for a few rival Hindu dynasties, from centuries of Muslim rule.

But those hapless Brits! The book contains page after page of English terms hugged by ironic scare quotes--sad results of pathetic colonial attempts to make sense of religious and political characteristics of India. Again, the authors' ironic knowingness is directed only at British and Hindu efforts to comprehend and manipulate, never at Muslim ones.

In the end, one feels rather manipulated oneself.

COCISE HISTORY OF MODERN INDIA

A good and possibly impartial account of Indian affairs.A connection with global affairs and how that influenced the country is impressive. Does not lecture as " I know best" how to improve or tackle the problems that the Indian nation faces is actually welcome. Most Western authors just cannot hold there emotions and end up suggesting solutions which possibly is more than what actually they sat down to achieve.

academic tone, unique insights

Read it on a recent trip to India, it's extremely well-written and surprisingly engaging. The authors depict India's history from an academic perspective and put events in a global context, enabling the reader to understand the nation and its current sociopolitical environment.

There are some biases that I assume arise from the the authors being Western academics, but I can't say I disagreed too often. Overall, it gave me a different perspective from what I am used to hearing from my family and Indian peers. As an Indian raised partly in India and then mostly around Indians in the US, I always wondered, "If our nation is so great, why are we one of the worst off third world countries out there? Why are there such disparities? Why is there so much corruption?" Was it entirely because of British rule and Imperialism? Or was it due to the nepotism and corruption of leaders who have taken advantage of the populace over the past half century? Or, worst of all, was it merely the bickering among a people who might have otherwise united to overcome their struggles, both within their country and against imperialism?

Ultimately, I came out with new ideas - though not complete theories - on how each of those is true to an extent and why. However, this book is far from comprehensive and I only took it as an addendum to what I had already learned and what I will eventually learn and observe on my own. I am very glad I read it, and I will probably re-read it when the next edition comes out.

About the Author
Judith Barrow grew up in a small village in Saddleworth, at the foot of the Pennines in North West England. In 1978 she moved with her husband, David, and their three children to Pembrokeshire, West Wales, where she is a creative writing tutor.Her short stories have been published in several of Honno anthologies. Silent Trauma was first published as an eBook, is now in paperback, and is her second novel. Her first novel, Pattern of Shadows was published by Honno in 2010. The sequel, Changing Patterns follows in May 2013

Super debut novel set in England during World War 2

What a super debut novel by a very skilled storyteller. This is a real page-turner of a book, with the scene set full of tension and multiple stories developing right from the first paragraph. The story is set in the North of England during World War 2; traverses many places and themes: hospital life, POW camps, Conscientious Objectors, prison, the difficulties of home life under rationing, the stifling closeness of families living in cramped and sub-standard (by modern times) homes.

At its core it's a love story, which takes many twists and turns, eventually reaching an unexpected conclusion. The reader feels great sympathy for the main character, Mary, a sister in the hospital serving the POW camp. She is the archetypal 'angel in the house' - protectively looking out for her mother and sister Ellen, working hard at her job, and giving over much of her wages to her bullying father, leaving little for social pleasures. A mistaken romantic liaison with a prison guard, Frank, goes horribly wrong, following which Mary becomes hopelessly attracted to a German doctor working at the hospital, but fraternisation with the enemy was a very dangerous area at that time and the secret begins.

It's a heady mix of interwoven stories, evoking a great sense of time and place, full of sparkling dialogue and intimate portrayals of characters.

Realistic and gritty

Pattern of Shadows revolves around the working class Howarth family, particularly Mary who is a nurse at a prisoner of war camp hospital in Lancashire. She is dedicated to, and loves, her job. Home life is another matter entirely. Her father is angry and bitter after his experiences in the First World War, embarrassed and furious at Mary’s brothers. Tom is imprisoned in Wormwood Scrubs for being a conscientious objector and Patrick, a Bevin Boy, forced to work in the mines instead of fighting on the front line and threatening to strike. Ellen, Mary’s sister, is only concerned with her own life and having a good time. And in the middle of all this is Winifred, Mary’s mother, who bears the brunt of her husband’s aggressiveness and violent temper.

When Mary meets Frank Shuttleworth, a friend of Patrick’s and a guard at the camp, she wonders if her life is about to change for the better. But Mary soon realises Frank is not all he seems, although she doesn’t completely realise the danger he poses. Mary’s life becomes even more complicated when Dr Peter Schormann arrives at the hospital to help with the patients and a risky attachment begins to grow between them.

The stark and grim reality of wartime in a Northern town is portrayed very realistically and with a tangible sense of place and atmosphere. The rows of terraced houses with outhouses in the yards, the lack of privacy and people just managing to get by with very limited resources create an evocative scenario. Well drawn and completely believable characters, clearly showing the constraints forced upon women in those not so distant times, the reality of such restrictions contrasting sharply with the much more open and broad-minded attitudes today. Prejudices, sexism and racism are rife.

It’s very refreshing to read about a different aspect of the war years. Life is unmistakably tough and I felt for Mary. Although her situation as the cornerstone of the family is difficult, she has the support of her brother, Tom, and best friend, Jean. Mary shows compassion and great strength of character despite the hardships. The storyline and the historical facts are woven together extremely well, demonstrating extensive research. Judith Barrow’s writing is articulate and expressive. A very satisfactory ending with enough left open for the second of the trilogy, which I’m looking forward to.

WW2 Family Drama

Pattern of Shadows is a WW2 historical fiction. Mary Howarth is a nurse in a hospital attached to the Granville German prisoner of war camp, which is near Manchester, Uk.

The story begins in 1944. Mary's brother Tom is a conscientious objector and in prison for his refusal to take part in the war. Her second brother Patrick, is a Bevin Boy, young men conscripted to work in the coal mines during the war to support the country. He's angry at having his choice to fight in Europe taken from him and we meet him when he's part of a striking work force.

Mary's Dad is also a man with a temper, he's embarrassed by his son Tom and angry with Patrick for striking. He remembers the first World War and his role which left him suffering from the effects of gas. He's playing his part with the local home guard, but often takes his anger out on Mary's Mum in violent ways.

Mary feels she holds the family together. Her younger sister, Ellen works in a munitions factory, but hates it, wanting to be young and carefree, she's reckless with the local American GIs.

Mary meets Frank, a friend of Patrick's and they start going out, but Mary isn't sure about him. He's a guard at the prison camp having been invalided out of the army with a knee injury.

At the hospital, German doctors help look after the patients and when two new doctors arrive, Mary feels a spark between herself and doctor Peter Schormann. But any romance would be extremely dangerous for them both, however they can't hide their feelings.

Confiding in best friend Jean, Mary's troubles begin to escalate. Heavy handed jealous Frank has a brawl and Mary doesn't like this violent side to him, but he won't take her rejection lightly. He begins to stalk her and notices her friendship with the German Doctor which he threatens to put an end to.

This book shows the hardships that families in England went through during the war, their suffering, lack of food and how they coped on a day to day basis. It was an interesting mix to have the "enemy" living along side them and the reactions that the locals had, their fears and loyalties tested to extremes. I really enjoyed the story and the ending had an unexpected revelation which was a delight.

He has been behind the morning microphone at WEEU for more than two decades, is a travel writer and columnist for the Eagle-Times, and has written 24 best-selling books on ghosts, folklore, and legends. He has also served on the board of the Historical Society of Berks County, which will receive all royalties from the sale of Reading.
