Building the Pennsylvania Turnpike

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is recognized for being the first modern highways of the 20th century. The initial 160 mile Carlisle to Irwin, Pennsylvania segment laid the groundwork for the present interstate highway system that we have taken for granted. Authors Mitchell Dakelman and Neal Schorr have researched the history of the Turnpike for years. The results of their research and approximately 200 of the thousands of photographs they have collected or taken themselves are included in this work. The book includes the Turnpike's foundations, including the primitive roadways and ill fated South Penn project, from which the Turnpike used as its route, up to the present day expansion and reconstruction projects that will bring this vital highway into the 21st century. All aspects of the construction are documented including right-of-way construction, paving, tunnels and the various bridges used to eliminate grade crossing to make this highway a true express highway. A must for transportation and auto fans, plus fans of the World's Greatest Highway!

The BEST PA Turnpike Publication To Date!

Many people know that the PA Turnpike was the United States's first superhighway. For that reason, it carries much historical importance. I have studied the Pa Turnpike, at one time known as "The Worlds Greatest Highway", for many years. I can say without a doubt that this book by Dakelman and Schorr is the best publication to date on the subject. Most of the photos have never been published before. What is nice is that you can take that book and go to those areas today and see what it looked like under construction.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever passed through the blue tollbooths of the Pa. Turnpike, thru the tunnels and over the rolling hills of Pennsylvania.

Great history book

This book contains many pictures. Pictures of the old South Penn Railroad. Then pictures of the construction. And pictures of the turnpike. The bridges, tunnels, and service plazas and different places on the turnpike. These all had character to then, and due to age and modernization, these thing have disappeared or are disappearing really fast, making the turnpike look like any other road. It is sad to see these thing go, but I do realize the turnpike needs to modernize and replace stuff that is worn out, but this book is truely a book to help show future generation what the turnpike did look like when it was built. This will help us show what it really look like then just say it was the first superhighway in America and explain what it look like and have then draw the wrong pictures in there minds.

Very Enjoyable

This book was a delightful walk through the past. It was a very enjoyable read and a wonderful opportunity to understand and appreciate life in the Big Bend during the 1940's. It was refreshing to read about the experiences of a family as average as my own,living in such unique circumstances. Their struggles and triumphs give a special insight into the lives of those who pioneered West Texas.

From training camps in Egypt through to the blissful summer of 1945 the ‘Div’ left its mark on towns and villages across Italy. From Monte Cassino to the outskirts of Venice and the River Po the campaign lasted exactly twelve months. During the advance through Rome up to Florence, it was a case of constant movement and violent contact with the enemy. Experiences which left an enduring impression on returned soldiers included the periods of rest at Siena and Lucca as well as the four miserable winter months in the northern Apennines. Overall, the casualty rate was surprisingly low considering the ideal ambush country and mountain defences which had to be overcome. In the rifle companies however, the rate of attrition was high and replacements were few. Among the South Africans who are buried in Italy, there are those who died in vehicle accidents, from drowning and falling out of windows or from suicide. For the ordinary soldier the most important part of everyday life was contact with home or foraging for food and wine, and even enjoying the company of signorine when operations permitted. Nevertheless, it was not one long happy camping trip as was often portrayed in the press. The cast is made up of the famous regiments and ordinary South Africans who participated in these epic events. James Bourhill did his national service in a mounted unit which nearly ruined his love of horses. He attended Cedara College of Agriculture, after which he went farming in Rhodesia and America before returning to South Africa as a farmer. Needing to discover why farming was so unprofitable, James studied agricultural economics at the University of Pretoria, attaining a master’s degree. By profession, he is a property valuer but his passion has always been history and travel. Superb tribute to the South African military presence in WWII

"Come Back to Portofino" is a valuable read for anyone with historical or military interest in WWII, South Africa, Italy, and participation of Allied troops beyond the core of Europe. I'd consider it an amalgamation of documentary and memoirs, written by the son of a participating soldier. Bourhill seamlessly weaves together tactical movement of the South African forces north through Egypt and Italy, with emotional responses of soldiers through their war diaries and letters home. He crafts a diverse and unbiased record of these often teenage soldiers facing experiences no amount of training could prepare them for. Working their way through the Italian countryside, the 6th South African Armored Division were known for their courage, strength, team spirit, and chivalry. The thing I loved most about this book was Bourhill's inclusion of the names and stories of hundreds of young men (and women) who sacrificed their lives and futures in the Allied world's fight against tyranny, racism, evil, & oppression. Just as there are Books of Rememberance for communities that were victim to the Holocaust, so "Come Back to Portofino" ensures that these South African soldiers will not be forgotten.

An excellent addition to WW2 studies

James Bourhill presents a painstakingly researched story of the Royal Natal Carbineers that is sure to please those who are interested in the ordinary soldier's view of World War 2. What makes this book really special is Bourhill's deft use of excerpts from letters written by the young men who left their homes in South Africa to fight in Italy. Of particular note are the excerpts from John Hodgson, who entered the army as a teenager and chronicled his experiences in more than 500 letters to his parents. A fascinating study that is well worth reading.

A Fantastic book. Deals with South African troops fighting as part of the Allied advance up the Italian boot. Te Author did a Fantastic job. their is even a lil bit about Rhodesian teopps whop served in this Division. The Publisher did a fantastic job as usual.

Had great potential but.....

I bought this book for a gift at Christmas for my husband. Both he and I collect postcards of Indiana. While there is no denying the postcards are great, the author unfortunately did not do his research and put together a book of half baked answers.

The author admits when he took on the project, he thought it was going to take a lot of time but due to a postcard club in Indy, he was able to cut that time down, and apparently cut the time he should have used for researching the location and if the places still exist.

Additionally, as an academic researcher, I am horrified by the lack of documentation of where the information came from. THere is a list in the back of the book, but it doesnt say on each page where the postcards came from or where the info about the location in the card came from. That is just inexcuseable.

If you are just looking for pretty cards of Indianapolis gone by, this is a good book. If you want more substance behind where it was, if it still exists, etc-- look elsewhere.

Original Color Postcards REDUCED to Black and White?

I am not sure why they decided to publish a book of postcards, the vast majority of which are available in COLOR on the internet, and turning them all into black and white photographs. So if you are hoping for a book that reproduces the actual color postcards, this is NOT the book for you.

A Great Book!

In the fact that I work with a lot of lawyers I am always very interested in reading about those in the law and how they impact society. This was such an interesting read, and I was engrossed from the beginning to the end. You truly feel that you are in the court room as you go through this book and there are so many instances where I found myself saying "that really happened?" If you are the type of person that loves history, the law or a book that keep you on the edge of your seat, you definitely will want to pick up a copy of this book for yourself!`

Called to Justice: The Life of a Federal Trial Judge (Law in the American West)

If you like exquisite prose, you will love this book. If you like history, you will love this book. If you like the law, you will love this book. If you like an autobiography that reads like a novel that keeps you up at night, you will love this book. Most of all, if you want to rekindle your belief in the basic goodness of this country, you will love this book.

Do not be daunted by the fact that the publisher is an academic press. Even the elites get it right every so often.

Called to Justice: The Life of a Federal Judge

This is a well-written book, that kept me turning pages. I was particularly interested in the recount of the Wounded Knee trials, that this judge presided over. But more than that, it really gives a good picture of trial law, and of a knowlegeable and even-handed trial judge.
