Cleburne County is strategically located between the two major cities of Birmingham and Atlanta. Once a part of Benton County, Cleburne County was officially created in 1866 by the Alabama legislature and named in honor of Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne, who served the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Talladega National Forest covers the western half of the county and includes Mount Cheaha, the highest point in the state. Cleburne County gained national notoriety in the 1840s when gold was discovered around Arbacoochee, which became one of the largest mining towns in the state. Over $5 million in gold was mined there. In the early 1900s, the area's mild climate and rich soil drew several hundred settlers from northern states who came to Cleburne County and established a wine-producing colony, Fruithurst, which produced as much as 23,000 gallons per year.

Meta-Regression Analysis in Economics and Business (Routledge Advances in Research Methods), by T.D. Stanley, Hristos Doucouliagos

The purpose of this book is to introduce novice researchers to the tools of meta-analysis and meta-regression analysis and to summarize the state of the art for existing practitioners. Meta-regression analysis addresses the rising "Tower of Babel" that current economics and business research has become. Meta-analysis is the statistical analysis of previously published, or reported, research findings on a given hypothesis, empirical effect, phenomenon, or policy intervention. It is a systematic review of all the relevant scientific knowledge on a specific subject and is an essential part of the evidence-based practice movement in medicine, education and the social sciences. However, research in economics and business is often fundamentally different from what is found in the sciences and thereby requires different methods for its synthesis—meta-regression analysis. This book develops, summarizes, and applies these meta-analytic methods.

A must
By Rodrigo Taborda
As a beginner in meta-analysis it took me a while to differentiate the kind of work needed when doing meta-analysis and meta-regression analysis for social sciences and economics from the standard approach in other sciences (medicine, psychology, biology).

Then, saw the whole picture, crystal clear, when I read from cover to cover Stanley and Doucouliagos book.

Downtown Silver Spring (Then and Now), by Jerry A. McCoy

In 1840, journalist and politician Francis Preston Blair discovered a sparkling mica-flecked spring that would serve as the centerpiece of his country estate, Silver Spring. In just over a century, this bucolic woodland, located across the border from Washington, D.C., became known as downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Author Jerry A. McCoy, founder and president of the Silver Spring Historical Society and a special collections librarian at the D.C. Public Library's Washingtoniana Division and Peabody Room, offers readers a tour of this dynamic central business district and surrounds.

Review
Title: Book opens new window into history of Silver Spring

Author: Alison Bryant

Publisher: Gazette.net

Date: 10/27/10

Panera Bread now fills the storefront once inhabited by Wright's Jeweler-Optician on the corner of Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road. McDonald's has replaced the Continental Oil Company. And The Portico Apartments mask the footprint of a row of bungalows on today's Fidler Lane.

Old and new images pair up, sometimes in stark contrast, in Jerry A. McCoy's new book of historic images titled "Then & Now: Downtown Silver Spring.''

"It's a good market to be able to educate these folks as to what makes Silver Spring unique and what things are important and what things we should hold onto and incorporate into a new, revitalized Silver Spring," said McCoy, president of the Silver Spring Historical Society.

The book takes the reader on a photographic journey through the history of Silver Spring, comparing images from the past with images of the present-day bustling urban center.

"It's an extremely compelling book with stunning images, and many of the photos show how then is now,'' said Marcie Stickle, longtime Silver Spring resident and advocacy chair of the Silver Spring Historical Society. "... We are luckily able to retain and repurpose many of our original buildings, especially along main streets, ... and that's very exciting,"

Shortly after McCoy published his first book, "Images of America: Historic Silver Spring'' in 2005, which documents the area from 1840 to the 21st century revitalization, he began receiving questions about why he excluded certain images, he said.

"I knew there was a lot missing from the first book that I did want to include," McCoy said. "It took about five years to accumulate enough new material, and I was very adamant. This was my own self goal that I didn't want to repeat any images in the second book that were in the first."

It took McCoy five years and significant historical detective work to complete his latest book. Tracking down historic materials involves contacting descendants of early Silver Spring residents and Internet research, McCoy said.

The online auction site eBay proves a valuable source for finding items that originated in Silver Spring, he said. Some of the Silver Spring Historical Society acquisitions fund goes to buying back bits of history for the community, he said.

"It's always magic to my ears when someone says, 'Oh, I have an old scrapbook of Silver Spring photos, and I never knew what to do with it,' " McCoy said. "It's really hard to find, though."

Digging up historic items from Silver Spring is no simple task, McCoy said, though he can't quite pinpoint why.

"I think it's a combination that we're not incorporated, and it's a very transient community where people are always coming and going," he said. "And, I hate to say it, but there's sort of a lack of pride in the identity of the community as a unique place."

Those of the World War II generation provide much of McCoy's material, he said. Now, many of those former residents live in Florida.

"I think there's probably more Silver Spring history in Florida than anywhere else in America," McCoy said.

The book aims to inform the community about what came before and inform new residents about the rich history of Silver Spring, he said.

"There's such new lifeblood moving into the community," McCoy said. "New couples, new singles, and they just have no concept or idea of what history evolved in Silver Spring. And these folks are very intelligent and probably very inquisitive, and they want to learn more about their new community and new neighborhood."

A Flaneur in Silver Spring
By Robin Friedman
A flaneur is a walker in the city -- a person who strolls and observes the passing life with both interest and detachment -- perhaps in the manner of Walt Whitman. The artistic medium of choice for the flaneur is photography. In a Wikepedia article, Susan Sontag is quoted as follows:

"The photographer is an armed version of the solitary walker reconnoitering, stalking, cruising the urban inferno, the voyeuristic stroller who discovers the city as a landscape of voluptuous extremes. Adept of the joys of walking, conniseur of empathy, the flaneur finds the world 'picturesque'".

Nothing could interest a flaneur more than photos of places seen in the course of walking. I have lived literally next door to Silver Spring, Maryland for many years and have walked its streets incessantly. This is in part due to choice and in part due necessity -- I don't drive a car. Although it is a suburb of Washington, D.C. Silver Spring has little of the character of a sleepy bedroom community. It is a distinct urban environment with a sense of place of its own. Over the years it has changed many times, from an early period of prosperity, to a long period of disrepair and deterioration, to its current revitalization which began in the mid-1990s. It is a pleasure to walk up and down the streets, to see the bridges, parks, railroad tracks, facades, businesses, and homes.

Even though I have walked Silver Spring for many years, Jerry McCoy's new book, "Downtown Silver Spring" (2010) made me catch myself and look afresh with new eyes. This is the second time I have had such an experience with McCoy, the founder and president of the Silver Spring Historical Society, and Silver Spring. An earlier book of McCoy's "Historic Silver Spring" Historic Silver Spring (MD) (Images of America) had taught me to use my walks in a new way, and McCoy's new book served as a reminder. Both books are published by Arcadia Publishing, a firm which specializes in historical photographs of local history. McCoy's new book includes a pithy introduction by the noted Washington D.C. noir writer, George Pelecanos.

The book consists of approximately 100 pages of photographs in which a historic photo of a Silver Spring landmark is juxtaposed with a photograph of the site as it is today. The area covered in the book is relatively compact. Thus McCoy moves block-by-block, almost building-by building in showing Silver Spring as it was in the early years of the 20th Century and as it has changed. Indeed, the Silver Spring landscape changes constantly. Some of the businesses shown as current in the book have already passed away due to the continued vicissitudes of the economy and are the stuff of memory.

The book is in four sections covering four areas. The first and longest section of the book treats the historic thoroughfare of Georgia Avenue, which I walk in both directions, south into Washington, D.C. and north to the Silver Spring downtown. The photos begin with an old trolley stop on Georgia Avenue and Eastern on the District line and proceed northward. Many of the old buuildings and archways remain, and I saw through photos what I pass many times but perhaps miss in my walks. Other sections of the book include photos of Silver Spring's other main street, Colesville Road which intersects with Georgia Avenue to form the city downtown. McCoy gives the reader a tour from the site of the current Metro station to a lovely old historic restaurant, Mrs. K's Toll House, on the east side of Colesville Road a landmark where I have spent the past two New Years Eves. The two remaining sections of the book cover East West Highway and Eastern Avenue which intersects Georgia Avenue near where I walk to the grocery store, and an area of old homes and new shops known as Fenton Village, just east of Georgia Avenue.

When I was reading this book on New Year's Day, I noticed a photograph of a place unfamiliar to me: a historical boundary marker placed in 1962 commemorating the location of a 1792 boundary marker of Washington, D.C. placed by Benjamin Banneker. (p. 80) I hadn't noticed the plaque before and was unsure of the location. Thus, I took a little New Year hike of perhaps one-half mile. I found the marker at a location I have passed many times in front of what is a small, delightful local bakery that had never caught my attention. Thus, I found both a marker that had escaped my notice and an intimate, friendly community gathering spot. People were gathered in the cafe quietly welcoming the new year. The little bakery has a copy of this book in the window, opened to the appropriate page,

This book will intruigue readers familiar with Silver Spring. More broadly, the book will appeal to flaneurs who love to walk city streets, to stroll, and to observe.

Bland County (Images of America), by William R.

Bland County is one of the smallest counties of the Old Dominion, yet it is filled with spectacular, unspoiled, scenic vistas that rival any rural area on the North American continent. Bland County is a tree-covered paradise with no incorporated towns, and about one-third of the county's 369 square miles are included in the Jefferson National Forest. The history of Bland County after the arrival of European settlers includes stories of patriotism, independence, as well as struggles against incredible odds. The Virginia General Assembly formed Bland County on March 30, 1861. The county has always been for progress, with lumber companies arriving in the late 19th century to harvest the county's vast timber resources and the railroad following at the start of the 20th century. Bland County was also home to a huge Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the 1930s. From communities like Ceres to No Business and Hicksville to Bland, the entire county has a great story to tell.

Sister Species: Women, Animals, and Social JusticeFrom University of Illinois Press

Sister Species: Women, Animals, and Social Justice addresses interconnections between speciesism, sexism, racism, and homophobia, clarifying why social justice activists in the twenty-first century must challenge intersecting forms of oppression._x000B__x000B_This anthology presents bold and gripping--sometimes horrifying--personal narratives from fourteen activists who have personally explored links of oppression between humans and animals, including such exploitative enterprises as cockfighting, factory farming, vivisection, and the bushmeat trade. Sister Species asks readers to rethink how they view "others," how they affect animals with their daily choices, and how they might bring change for all who are oppressed. These essays remind readers that women have always been important to social justice and animal advocacy, and they urge each of us to recognize the links that continue to bind all oppressed individuals. The astonishing honesty of these contributors demonstrates with painful clarity why every woman should be an animal activist and why every animal activist should be a feminist._x000B__x000B_Contributors are Carol J. Adams, Tara Sophia Bahna-James, Karen Davis, Elizabeth Jane Farians, Hope Ferdowsian, Linda Fisher, Twyla Francois, Christine Garcia, A. Breeze Harper, Sangamithra Iyer, Pattrice Jones, Lisa Kemmerer, Allison Lance, Ingrid Newkirk, Lauren Ornelas, and Miyun Park.

On animal advocacy and oppression from the feminist side
By BLehner
A feminist view on animal advocacy? I certainly haven't heard about such an approach before. All the more reason for me to pick up Sister Species: Women, Animals And Social Justice to satisfy my curiosity.
In her anthology Lisa A. Kemmerer introduces the reader at length to the topic of animal activism and its close connection to other forms of oppression such as sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. sharing a collection of essays focusing on animal ethics. These essays are as diverse as the women who wrote about their experiences, including cock fighting, factory farming, the bushmeat trade, as well as contemplating theology and animals, to mention but a few.
You don't have to be a feminist to understand this book and its message. Being vegetarian probably helps. Overall I think it's almost safe to say that a lot of people won't like this book, because it forces them to rethink their view of "the other", in this case non-human animals, but it is important to understand that what we do for "us" (humans) should not be achieved at the cost of "others" (animals). Inconvenient truths? You bet. And if it weren't for women like those contributing to this book, the voices of those who can't fight for themselves would only be heard in slaughterhouses and experimental laboratories.
In short: This book will change your way of thinking about animals who don't happen to be human. Read it!

Putting Traumatic Knowledge to Work for the Animal People of the Planet
By Karen Davis, PhD
Sister Species: Women, Animals, and Social Justice
Edited by Lisa Kemmerer, Forward by Carol J. Adams
University of Illinois Press, 2011

Review by Karen Davis, PhD, President of United Poultry Concerns

"When you put down this book, ask yourself, `in relationship to the other animals, what is my own story of awareness and engagement?' `What does this awareness ask of me?' " - Carol J. Adams, Forward.

"The theology chair was on the phone when I arrived, so I had to stand awkwardly in the hallway. I felt like a naughty schoolchild outside the principal's office. I waited for quite some time. Obviously, I was not a high priority, just a nuisance. But I was an eighty-year old woman, a pioneer woman theologian of almost fifty years. I had to remind myself that I was on a new and unique mission - who I was or how I was treated did not matter - I was here to bring change for nonhuman animals." - Elizabeth Jane Farians, "Theology and Animals"

Sister Species presents the experiences of fourteen women activists who are working on behalf of nonhuman animals and a more just and compassionate world. Representing a diversity of backgrounds, ethnicities and social identities, they tell their gripping stories. The key ideas in this collection, of empathy, silence, trauma, and voice, arise from each author's personal struggle to become conscious, strong, expressive and morally effective in a world dominated by "normal" violence, ethical blindness (both unwitting and willful) and abounding cruelties. The contributors are people who have put their traumatic knowledge to work for the animal people of the planet, our sister species.

Several contributors reveal their own complicity in animal cruelty, even after they became aware of the abuses they were supporting. For one contributor, guilty knowledge of what her university job entailed facilitated a genetic predisposition to the cancer that killed her grandmother, aunt, and mother. Canadian-based farmed animal cruelty investigator, Twyla Francois, writes: "During this brush with death, I examined my life and pondered where I'd taken a wrong turn. I realized that after fighting through my teen years, I had ultimately succumbed to society's demands. I turned to books like Reviving Ophelia, which examines how prepubescent women, before they have been manipulated, are their true selves."

In addition to self-examination and a recounting of the difficult recovery and discovery of one's true self and vocation, Sister Species looks at the resistance of many feminists to the inclusion of nonhuman animals in their ethic of opposition to all forms of oppression. In her Introduction, Editor Lisa Kemmerer, associate professor of philosophy and religion at Montana State University-Billings, cites the often ferocious feminist opposition to animal-free meals at feminist conferences. Kemmerer and Carol J. Adams inquire of such exclusionary feminism: why is it necessary to challenge cultural traditions of male dominance over women, "but not cultural traditions of human dominance over nonhumans?"

Much in Sister Species is enraging and crushingly sad. In "Freeing Feathered Spirits," professional artist and animal activist, Linda Fisher, describes how seeing a parakeet suffering and dying in a department store as a child led her to dedicate much of her life to educating people about the plight of captive parrots. Her activism began when she summoned the courage to tell the store clerk that this little bird was sick and needed help. The clerk ignored her and she started to cry, still pleading, when two security guards grabbed her and forced her out of the store and told her to "Stay out!" "I thought I'd broken the law, that I had committed some terrible crime," she writes. Fisher, who is part Ojibway and Cherokee, describes her conflicted emotions at Native American functions, where "leather goods, feathers, and trinkets made of nonhuman animals' bodies" surround her. Her story of Lily, an Eclectus parrot caged in a feed store with other exotic birds, is excruciating, but instead of giving up, Fisher paints a large canvas, which she calls "A Blessing for Lily."

In my own contribution, "From Hunting Grounds to Chicken Rights: My Story in An Eggshell," I respond to the often asked question of how I "started as an academic and ended up as an animal rights activist rescuing and defending the rights of chickens and turkeys." Actually, I didn't start as an academic. My story begins in a Pennsylvania town where hunting and fishing and conservative politics prevailed. I have my own sad parakeet story to relate from my childhood along with my lifelong affinity for birds, my involvement in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, my obsession with the Nazi concentration camps in college, and other preoccupations that put me on a path totally different from my parents' wishes. ("When I questioned my father's point of view, my mother said I should respect other people's opinions. I replied that I was only obliged to respect other people's right to hold an opinion, not the opinion itself.") I describe the events that led to the precise moment when I became an animal rights activist, my work on behalf of chickens and turkeys, and my philosophy of engagement for animals.

My outlook on animal activism and the realities that animals and their advocates face has much in common with the views set forth by contributors Allison Lance and Tara Sophia Bahna-James. Lance, whose essay "A Magical Talisman" evokes her gut-wrenching work with Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, sums up her opinions forged by the unspeakable atrocities she's witnessed toward nonhuman animals on both sea and land by disparate cultures: "People often ask, `Do you think there is hope?' I find this a very strange question, very anthropomorphic - hope for whom?" The words that follow are like a torrent of waves during shipwreck.

In "The Art of Truth-Telling," Bahna-James explains that animal advocates need to "step into that uncomfortable place where we acknowledge that the scope of the problem is unfathomable, but the individual act still has meaning. Animals need us to be courageous and curious and to accept the possibility of failure. And they need us to not let things we cannot do stop us from doing what we can."

In her Forward, Carol J. Adams notes that the essays in Sister Species don't just offer insights into why and how women work on behalf of animals. "Through their stories, these writers give us the opportunity to learn more about what is happening to animals," she says. Anyone who desires to be a stronger, more confident advocate and to feel less alone, despairing, and frustrated in pursuit of justice for animals, anyone who cares about what animals are going through and about animals themselves, including dragonflies and hornets and the community of life on earth: Sister Species is for you.

Inspiring and Paradigm-Shifting! A must-read for humans everywhere!
By VeganLioness
Lisa Kemmerer's book, Sister Species is both inspiring and informative. It offers unique experiences in the animal justice movement, grounded in the leading edge theory of intersectionality.

Lisa's introduction is the best explanation I've read on intersectionality and ecofeminism. She lays out the basics of how feminism and animal advocacy are linked. Her introduction explains the philosophy in an easy-to-understand way for those new to the topic and helps those of us already familiar with the topic to fully grasp the importance of linking feminism to other-than-human animal issues.

The diversity of entries are uplifting and illuminating. For some of us who have experienced the 'animal rights world' ourselves, we know that the much of the animal rights movement reflects that of the general society - patriarchal, white-supremacist, classist, ageist, etc. This intersectional approach is the missing link that any social justice-oriented person would benefit from educating herself about. Speciesism is so easy to overlook and this book does a great job bringing our unique experiences with nonhuman individuals to the forefront. A. Breeze Harper's story of how her father encouraged her compassion was very touching.

As I read this collection of essays, I was touched by the authors' unique stories and also reminded of heart-touching, beautiful, meaningful moments in my life that awakened my compassion. Reading it was an emotionally healing experience. The ways that the authors turned their compassion and despair at what is done to other-than-human animals into positive action was inspiring as well.

This book shows why we need an intersectional approach to animal advocacy. I loved the diversity of entries. It delves into culturally taboo topics like racism, gender identities and how we project them onto animals, classism, environmental issues, and unique experiences that touched the authors' lives.

I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who is saddened at the cruelty inflicted on animals, anyone who wonders why there is so much violence against women in our world, anyone who is concerned about the environment, and anyone who wants to co-create a kinder world in general.

Reseña de Historias Imaginarias
By Gaby

Totalmente recomendado.

The Pain Is Still Too Real
By stfor
I have read many books on the Native American History. I am of Mixed Blood and have always had a high interest in Cherokee culture. When I started reading this book I couldn't put it down and finished it in a few days. When I finished I was left wanting more. I frequent Tahlequah two or three time a year as my Grandmother lived there until her passing a few years ago. Next time I return I will have a whole new outlook on the town. Every story tugs at the heartstrings because of the tortures and pain that was inflicted on the true American Natives to this country. I thought I knew alot about the history, but found many many new things I didn't know. Personally I would like to thank Ms Duvall for authoring this Great Book.

this is a great book, to see what life was really like in the 1800's. for anyone who thought that the Cherokees were still living in teepees
