Thompson, who has written about both the movies and organized crime, turns his attention here to the relationship between the Mob and Hollywood—and not just in the early years but right up to the present. In tone, the book resembles most closely one of Kurt Eisenwald’s lively, character-based business books: the story is as much about the people as what they did. And they did some pretty outrageous stuff, if Thompson is to be believed (and there appears to be no reason not to believe him, as the book is exhaustively researched and sourced). If you’ve always thought Hollywood careers were made through talent and hard work, you might be surprised at some of the revelations here, and even if you’ve always suspected some Hollywood folks had someone in their corner, operating behind the scenes, you might still be shocked at what you read here. What a story

It was amazing to read all the unknown stories behind the making of Hollywood. Mostly the mob took it over when it saw how much money, sex and business opportunities the movie business provided.
The tales of murders, extortions, and official corruption in Los Angeles is astounding, and scary!
There are so many names, so much information about those days, this book must be read more than once, in order to begin to get an idea of what Hollywood was like----- and how, it may not be much different today.

Douglas Thompson's THE DARK HEART OF HOLLYWOOD is an eye-opening expose of the Mafia's involvement in Tinseltown. Though its emphasis is on Hollywood, Thompson's book, a 2013 Mainstream Publishing release, traces the Mafia's influence nationwide and around the world as regards the motion picture industry.
As documented in Thompson's entertaining account, organized crime has been involved in the film industry since silent pictures. Thompson details the who-what-where-why of all the Hollywood/Mafia dirty dealing over the decades. The book reads like a combined edition of 'Who's Why of Hollywood Movers and Shakers' and 'American Mafiosa of the 20th Century.' Among the players are Johnny Rosselli, Frank Nitti, Fatty Arbuckle, Thomas Ince, Thelma Todd, Harry Cohn, Joe Kennedy, Bugsy Siegel, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Cohen, Johnny Stompanato, Lana Turner, JFK, Lew Wasserman, Marvin Mitchelson, Robert Evans, etc. What's most interesting in this cast of characters is discovering the behind-the-scenes powers-that-be that greased the machinery, men like Sidney Korshak and Charlie Bluhdorn; who?!? The Mafia made early inroads into the movie industry through supplying drugs, gambling and alcohol. In time, they moved into control of unions and became ever more powerful, silent partners in much of the industry in American and abroad.
The wealth of information presented in THE DARK HEART OF HOLLYWOOD is truly impressive. Thompson did his homework and then some. The result is a wide-ranging, informative summary of how the Mafia took over Hollywood. Highly recommended.

This is a terrific book by a Brit journalist who actually met/interviewed many of the star players here.
Very well written and researched, this belongs on your shelf (or kindle) next to Tere Tereba's excellent Mickey Cohen book.
Focusing on the underworld's role/connection in the wildly lucrative business of "Hollywood" - from past to present. it reveals new, incendiary stories. It's fascinating in that it gives a real overview on the mutil-layered and pervasive infiltration of this legitimate industry by the criminal elite. A must read for true crime aficionados, those who love Hollywood lore, history, and business buffs!
