A book by local author Julian Preisler is now available for sale, featuring a visual narrative of the history of Jews in West Virginia.



Preisler's book, "Jewish West Virginia," includes 128 pages of pictures and text that tell the stories of people, families, local synagogues and Jewish-owned businesses in the state. The book features 25 pictures from the Eastern Panhandle, including pictures from Martinsburg, Charles Town and Harpers Ferry.



Preisler, a native of Detroit, has lived all over the East Coast and has settled in the Panhandle for the last six years. His decision to move was motivated by "a search for peace and quiet ... and affordable housing," Preisler said.



Once Preisler moved here, he began researching local Jewish history, particularly that of Martinsburg. Preisler's research soon expanded to include the entire state.



"When I started, you could type 'Jewish West Virginia' into Google and nothing (of substance) would come up. I wrote the book because it needed to be written," he said.



Preisler's interest in history stems in part from being the son of two Holocaust survivors. His parents, from Germany and the Czech Republic, both lost many heirlooms, artifacts, pictures and even friends and family during the war.



"Documentation is important," Preisler said. "Wars and natural disasters happen, and the history is lost without documentation."



Although he has published eight books to date, as well as contributing to countless other publications, Preisler considers himself a researcher first, saying "I am a researcher ... I write by necessity."



Over a year of such research has gone into this most recent recent book.



Of the photographs in "Jewish West Virginia," the majority are vintage and most are Preisler's own. Those pictures that were not his own often required "a lot of work" to obtain. As Preisler explained, many of the photographs are family heirlooms from Jewish families all across the state.



"Sometimes those photographs can be hard to get your hands on ... especially in a high-quality digital version," Preisler said.



He gathered more than 300 pictures for the book, cataloging the history and significance of each, but was only able to publish 200 of them due to Arcadia's publishing constraints.



"With this particular series, the Images of America Series, it's set. The book will be 128 pages with a maximum 200 pictures. I wish that I could have included more," he said. "I actually had to cut out a couple small towns in the lower parts of the state with very small Jewish populations."



Preisler hopes that his book will both inspire new research and bring memories back to those who can remember the history that it contains.



"I was very pleased when I saw the final copy," Preisler said. "Although I wrote and formatted the book, it's nice to see your work come out right."



"Jewish West Virginia" is available at local bookstores as well as through Arcadia Publishing. The list price of the book is $21.99, and Preisler is selling signed copies at list price. Readers interested in a signed copy can contact Preisler at jhp1963@yahoo.com.

New acquisitions Oscar Gamble, Richie Zisk, and Eric Soderholm led the team to a franchise record 192 home runs, while legendary broadcaster Harry Caray led Comskey Park fans through the seventh-inning stretch. The White Sox won 90 games that season (including 22 in an amazing month of July) and finished first in the hearts of baseball fans across the city's South Side.

Take a trip back to the summer of '77 with the South Side Hitmen!

Awesome book chronicling a surprising yet memorable season of baseball on Chicago's South Side, full of Falstaff beer, softball-type uniforms with big wide collars, more Bill Veeck fan promotions than you could shake a stick at, astounding home runs from "rent-a-players" Richie Zisk and Oscar Gamble, not to mention exciting play from favorites Jim Spencer, Steve Stone, Lamar Johnson, Wilbur Wood, Chet Lemon and Eric Soderholm ("the Poet Laureate of the White Sox"), and the beginnings of Comiskey Park organist Nancy Faust leading the "Na-Na Hey-Hey Goodbye" chant that Sox fans partake in to this day. Helpingstine provides a very informative narrative here, and this book contains one of the most bountiful collections of photographs you'll find from the mid-70s White Sox (most of which were generously provided by Leo Bauby). My favorites among these are a rare photograph of broadcaster Harry Caray with colleague Mary Shane (the first female play-by-play announcer in Major League history... her time in the White Sox booth was limited to the '77 season only), a photo of a Kansas City Royals player confiscating a fan's banner reading "WELCOME ANNUAL PENNANT CHOKERS", a picture of pitcher Terry Forster in the infamous shorts the Sox wore in an August, 1976 game (yes it was from the previous season but the photo still fits here), and a VERY rare photograph of Harry Caray with the Falstaff Beer mascot "Holy Cow". Unfortunately a division championship wasn't meant to be, and one by one the Hitmen moved on (the book closes with a list chronicling "the dismantling of the South Side Hitmen" and all the trades and losses to free agency). Despite that, the magic of the South Side Hitmen lives on with White Sox fans everywhere and this book captures everything we cherish from that one wild, wacky summer.

for those who loved the Sox of '77

Even without making the play-offs the 1977 White Sox will always hold a special place in my heart. If you feel the same way, or are just interested in baseball history - you will appreciate this book. Richie Zisk, Oscar Gamble, Wilbur Wood, etc...and those crazy-awful uniforms - a fun season to be sure. This book brings back many memories and any baseball fan has to appreciate that someone (Dan Helpingstine) would see how special it was. Great photos.

Interesting book on one of the few Good White Sox teams.

Better then I expected though still bit amateurishly written. Maybe that's partly why I liked it to... Great rare photos throughout. I realize that White Sox fans had very little to hang their hat on and that this '77 team was best of rare bunch of good teams. Poor owner Bill Veeck was renown for trading talent he knew he couldn't resign (remember this was the beginning of Free Agency era) but I applaud him for keeping team in Chicago. Fierce Hitters row (Zisk, Gamble, Lemon, Johnson, Spencer, Garr, Soderholm, Downing, etc) playing in that tiny ballpark but their pitching was abysmal.

I think the one thing that didn't like was "laziness" of writer/editor on one specific pic. It showed '77 All Star pic of Richie Zisk , with two players next to him. Well of course it noted (correctly) one was legendary Reggie Jackson. But the other it just described as "Red Sox player". Well that person wasn't exactly obscure or unidentifiable...it was Carl Yastrzemski!!! How do you miss that??? I literally had to double-take the caption underneath it, not believing they couldn't identify him in obvious photo of him,,,he wasn't blurred out, cut out, bad angle, etc...it was Yaz. That obvious "omission" (or an error...the guy was one of the most recognizable players in the 60s & 70s lol) took the book down a notch for me.

Sadly the South Side Hitmen lasted just one season...the last page showing a telltale of what happened to all the players, eventually moving on (not one player finished his career w/the White Sox - Chet Lemon remained the longest, just 4 yrs).

I'd recommend this hard-to-find book but would not pay exhorbitant amount. It has a nice small time feel to it...by a lifelong fan who really cherished this team. But as often happens, something gets lost in the translation - in this case poor sentence structure and poor editing - that keeps it a good, but not great read. For once I'd definitely like to note the photos...many were great. A few were blurry but didn't have issue as they showed a unique feel for this once-in-a-generation good White Sox team that the city embraced so well.

A Soulful Drink of History

Beam, Straight Up reads like a great glass of bourbon - smooth, earthy, and with just a little kick on the way down. This is the story of how a distinctly American family produced and nurtured a distinctly American brand. Fred Noe writes with a down-home humility that I found to be engaging. He seems like the kind of guy that you would love to swap stories with over a great glass of bourbon.

This really isn't a business book, although business people can learn many lessons about building a great company, innovating, and staying relevant for centuries. It really isn't a history book, although there is a lot of fascinating history about how bourbon is made. It is absolutely a great book about finding and staying true to your roots.

It is worth a couple of nights with a great glass of bourbon to read.

Fred Knoe comes across in the book just as he does in real life. Very down to earth and says what he is thinking. The book is the next best thing to sitting down with him in person for a friendly visit. It is an easy read and very entertaining.

Fred tells the story, with warts and embarrassments included, on his life, the Beam family, the art/science making Bourbon, and building a brand.

Funniest part: Fred’s employer hires a speech coach. He is taught how to speak and change his dialect. Hilarious.

Histiry should be kept alive

The historical pictures and context of this book has bestowed great pride in our town.It is important for every town to have a historical record and Mr. Wright has done an excellent job in preserving our history through the juxtaposition of the old and the new.We are fortunate to have a person who has devoted time and effort to keep history alive. It was a VERY DELIGHTFUL read.

Being a 50+ year resident of Avon, I found this book extremely fascinating. My children grew up in the Briarcliff section of Avon and graduated from Roaring Brook School to Avon High School. I watched the Avon fire department burn down the horse barn and the grand stand. So much was familiar. Great Town! Great book of it's history.
I have purchased many other great books from Amazon. A favorite being "Racing In The Rain" by Garth Stein.

About the Author
Jim Davis was born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana. He later attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he distinguished himself by earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university. (Incidentally, a fellow classmate named David Letterman earned the other). The Garfield strip was born on June 19, 1978, syndicated in forty-one U.S. newspapers. Today it’s syndicated in more than 2,100 newspapers worldwide with more than 200 million readers, leading Guinness World Records to name Garfield The Most Widely Syndicated Comic Strip in the World. Davis has had many successes with Garfield, including four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program and induction into the Licensing Hall of Fame (1998), but his most prized awards are from his peers in the National Cartoonist Society: Best Humor Strip (1981 and 1985), the Elzie Segar Award (1990), and the coveted Reuben Award (1990) for overall excellence in cartooning.

I just couldn't stop laughing. Garfield is hilarious in his 40th book. The fat furry feline has done it again. Garfield lovers should buy this one. His best book yet.

Survival of the fattest

What haven't I said about Garfield that I have already said before? Congratulations to Garfield in giving the public his 40th book of non-stop laughter. I grew up on Garfield the cat since the early '80s. Twenty + some years later, Garfield is still fat and still funny as ever. In his 40th book, Garfield is still up to his same tricks; making fun of Jon, abusing Odie, squashing spiders, and matching wits with Nermal the world's cutest kitten. I particularly love seeing Garfield squash spiders. It was good seeing Nermal make a brief appearance. I always loved it when Nermal would come to visit Garfield and antagonize the fat cat with his one-liners. No matter how old I am, I can never tire of reading the fat cat's antics. Jim Davis can do no wrong.

If You're Hungry For Garfield, This Is A Satisfying Treat

I can never get enough of Garfield's sarcastic humor, so I love to sit down with a book like this and read six months of strips in one single sitting.
This, his 40th book, covers the strips from June-December of 2001 with a few outrageous outtakes in which you won't recognize Garfield before he took on his present form.
My favorites are always the ones with Nermal, but his neighbor Mrs. Feeny also gets her share of torture from the tubby tabby and his antics with Jon and Odie take center stage. When it comes to cats, fat is where it's at and nobody does fat better than Garfield in a smorgasboord of full-color strips to make you laugh the day away.

Good start - but loses momentum

Two people are stuck in an elevator together. They are total opposites. Gina is a sharp-as-a-tack financial advisor determined to make it to the top of the business world. Brad is a sculptor of wood and furniture builder who lives in the boondocks with his two daughters, his wife having died some years before. She likes the city, he likes the country. She wants the fast track, he wants the slow track.

But during their hour together in the dark, with no power and no way to see each other, they talk and create a bond. When the elevator suddenly lurches downward, there is a desperate kiss. And out of that is born the beginnings of what could be a relationship.

The best part of this book is that very section in the elevator when two diametrically opposed people discover an attraction. The rest is taken up with a process of trying to see if they can bridge the gulf between them. Gina can't have children and has convinced herself she doesn't want them. Can she become a replacement mother to two needy girls, one a sulky teen going through puberty? Can Brad, who is a bit of a Luddite, allow his daughter to have a cellphone? Would he permit a computer in his home?

As you can see, major major dilemmas and issues. This reader became a little tired of them. And the physical attraction between the characters is described in words but is not convincing. These are two grown-ups yet they behave like teens on the brink of their first relationship. Still enough has been created in the opening chapter to want to find out how it gets resolved. The climactic scene, I found, disappointing. After all the molehills that have been constructed, one would have expected something really romantic to happen to get these two together. Sorry, didm;t do it for me.

The story line was interesting and I loved reading the Australian phrases. But the story dragged on. It was one of those romances where you wish the two main characters would just talk to each other instead of assuming they know what the other is thinking.

This book had the potential to be a great love story but fell short it just dragged. The characters fell in love just because it could have been great I kept waiting for something to happen but it never came would not recommend

An author who blends real life with academic research

Finally, an author who tells it like is is ! Hanson's real life experiences blend with his academic research to produce a book that has practical application both professionally and personally. His master of the difficult art of telling parables adds a dimension to this book that is missing in other books on this topic.
