Bob has served as the town's administrator for more than 37 years and is also an adjunct member of the faculty at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Carleen has held various positions including administrative assistant and special projects coordinator since first employed by Bridgewater in 1994. Most of the pictures, which depict Bridgewater during the 19th and 20th centuries, are from the town's archives.

Canadian Version!

I also ordered the correct book, but was sent the Canadian version. I see now that I simply ordered the cheapest 'new' edition from the American page, but it is NOT the same book. It needs to have the Canadian details on the American page so that shoppers don't conveniently use the one-click Amazon shopping tool, but receive the wrong edition of the book they need. I am having a hard time matching this edition up with the one my professor is using.

At one point, there were more millionaires per capita in Dalton than anywhere in the country. What they might not realize is the wealth of history behind the house, statue and train depot.

A new pictorial history book of Dalton and north Georgia a aDalton, a published by Arcadia Publishing a begins with the Cherokee Indians who first inhabited north Georgia and continues with the Hispanic population that has helped Dalton remain The Carpet Capital of the World.

Tom Deaton, a retired history professor at Dalton State College, spearheaded the project. But third- through fifth-grade students at Dalton Public Schoolsa C3 Center for gifted students housed at the International Academy at Blue Ridge School did much of the legwork by collecting many of the bookas photographs.

aHad we not put something together like this, they all may have been lost, a Deaton said. aA lot of the stories would have been lost along the way.a

The students may have even learned a few history lessons along the way.

Ainsworth Emery Blunt, whose surname graces the home on Thornton Avenue, was Daltonas first postmaster and mayor. The Gen. Joseph E. Johnston statue downtown that honors the Civil War general was erected and dedicated by the Bryan M. Thomas chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1912. The cost? $6,000. Before serving steaks and hamburgers, the Dalton Depot building served as a train depot.

Ten-year-old Jordon McKinney enjoyed the pictures of theold train depot. He even talked about the circle of nails in the wooden floor that mark the center of town.

aIt was sort of fun to see people and things you know today in the old pictures and being able to see what they looked like then, a he said.

The Dalton High School football team picture from 1952-1953 stuck in Taitlyn Chesseras mind.

aThey had different helmets and everything about the uniforms was different, a said Taitlyn, also 10.

Mary Charlotte Smalley, 10, was struck by people in period dress and also the amount of construction that had occurred at many of the buildings around town.

aThey looked the same, but they also looked a little bit different, a she said.

Deaton sought the help of C3 teachers Myra Owens, Brenda Ownbey, Tammy Poplin and Vanessa Rinkel as well as several local history experts. The bookas foreword is written by Dalton native Deborah Norville, an award-winning journalist and host of the television program aInside Edition.a

The project started out innocently enough. Owenby invited Deaton to talk to her students about the history of Dalton. Deaton, who has written several books, including aFrom Bedspreads to Broadlooms: The Story of the Tufted Carpet Industry, a had been asked by Arcadia Publishing to put together the book. A similar pictorial history book of Acworth that Deaton brought along for the lecture seemed to enthuse the students.

aThey said, aOh, we can do that!a Deaton said.

So in January Deaton and Mark Pace, the editor emeritus of The Daily Citizen, talked to students about Daltonas history. They instructed students to track down any historical pictures they could. The studentssearched the Internet using Google Images and rifled through pictures that belonged to family members. More than 1,000 pictures were submitted.

The pictures were sorted into 10 chapters: Early Dalton, Lenna Judd, Transportation, Special Events, African-Americans in Dalton, Churches, Businesses, Schools, Government and Hispanics in Dalton. The result? A 128-page book with more than 400 pictures and about 18,000 words.

aItas a really good mix of the history of Dalton, a Owenby said. aThere isnat just one group represented, itas everybody. There is something that pertains to everybody.a

A book signing for aDaltona will be on Nov. 13 at 4: 30 p.m. at Dalton City Hall. About 220 students with Dalton Public Schoolsa C3 Center helped compile photos and write copy for the book, which is distributed by Arcadia Publishing. The book, which has a cover price of $21.99, is available at several businesses around town and Web sites such as amazon.com.

Thomas Deaton holds a doctor of philosophy in history and master’s degrees in divinity and geography. He is a professor of social science at Dalton State College, the author of Bedspreads to Broadloom: The Story of the Tufted Carpet Industry, and author/editor of other works on Dalton and Whitfield County. Dr. Brenda Ownbey, Myra Owens, Tammy Poplin, and Vanessa Rinkel are gifted teachers of the C3 at the International Academy at Blue Ridge School, and 220 of their students assisted with this book.

Don't buy here...way over-priced!!!

Please be careful before purchasing these books here...
They can be purchased in Dalton @ various places like Peacock Alley and the Crown Archives for less than $10! They will even ship them for a whole lot less than the costs seen here. Some of the people selling on Amazon are trying to rip you off.

Many books on program evaluation focus on complicated techniques, theories, and processes. Phillips' 'Handbook' presents training evaluation in a practical, useful manner. Each chapter clearly presents the whys and hows of training evaluation. He presents the research fundamentals, but also considers the feasibility of many processes used by researchers--offering options to those of us who need evaluation, but work in the 'real-world'. This is by far the best book on evaluation!

The book is used in organizations as well as colleges and universities to help practitioners and managers of training evaluation understand the process as well as the importance of evaluating all training programs. We just built our first fitness center at MD Anderson, and it had been more than 15 years since I had built and ran a fitness center. Joann's book helped me ask the right questions, and gave me the confidence that we were going to open and run a safe, successful worksite fitness center. A must for worksite wellness libraries.

Good basic information

This book is a good basic overview of risk management. Has lots of case examples and usuable suggestions on actions to take. A little wordy and not easy to read (to much extraneous info) I think it could have been done in much less space. Still good info on the subject matter.

A crucial book to understand corporate propaganda

Inger Stole's book is an incredibly important tale of a forgotten history, the period in the 1930s when organized citizens stood up to and attempted to limit the power and influence of corporate propaganda in the form of the then nascent and now dominant corporate advertising industry. That fight was lost, as have been most important battles since against the intrusion of corporations into genuine culture and civil society. I hope this is the first of regular future books by Inger Stole who has an important place beside Klein, Ewen, Nader, McChesney and other critics of corporate power over our daily lives as citizens.

A history most don;t know

This history is an indispensable portion of the history of the US Consumer movement that began in force with the Progressive era of one Roosevelt and that was reinvigorated in the era of a second. It focuses in particular on Government's attempt to provide consumer protections, through the FDA and FTC and institutions like the Better Business Bureau and more importantly the Consumers Union that arose to shape the landscape. In addition to providing a good read of legislative battles long forgotten it provides insights into the people and attitudes behind the mass communication of advertising. Many more histories have been written of the FDA in this era, including by FDA itself, many of which better represent the creation myths of the FDA and consumer protection, as though certain important events occurred in a vacuum. This book has such laser like focus on advertising and the birth of FTC's modern controls of advertising that it too is best understood if the reader already has a broader context. That said, this book uniquely provides a history that helps American's understand our unique consumerism.

For reliable, thirteen-year-old Bella, life isn’t turning out quite as she’d hoped. The innkeeper's daughter

I enjoyed this evocation of the life of innkeeping families in Yorkshire in the nineteenth century. Through the person of Bella, whose father is an inn tenant, we see the rural life as farm labourers are fed and put up during harvest season, travellers are warmed and refreshed, and local people come for a quiet pint and game of dominoes. Innkeeping is profitable enough if the landlord can just refrain from drinking his stock.

With the early death of Bella's father, she, her brothers, little sister and pregnant mother, are left to run the business as best they can. Then her mother becomes homesick for Hull, the port town where she was brought up, and decides to move the family here to take on a pub instead, thus giving us a good contrast.

We also meet a young man James, second son from the manor family, who trains to become a doctor with the aim of helping the people around him, and becomes caught up in the streams of wounded from the Crimean war. Medicine is changing as new treatments and ideas are proven; theories about cholera, wound infection and ether for women in labour have arisen.

This tale is less a romance than a depiction of the times. We see perhaps too easy a path for Bella's family, as the pub owners don't cavil at dealing with women, they don't need to incur debt and Bella, oddly, is not beset by admirers nor considered a loose woman because she works in an inn. The lesson that hard work, clean living and treating others with respect will help you prosper is excellently conveyed and it's good to see a social history that is not about squalor and abusive parents.

Other books I've read by Val Wood include The Hungry Tide and The Doorstep Girls and I find her a very good writer. She says that an inn was owned by some of her forebears but has been demolished to make way for a road.

I really enjoyed this reading although I had to use the dictionary a lot. I would really recommend this book but wished it didn't end so quickly.

Interesting and Important; 4.5 Stars

This book is a concise summary of a large volume of scholarly work by the foremost scholar of 19th century globalization, Jeffrey Williamson. Williamson's major question is whether or not the pattern of 19th century globalization contributed to the enormous divergence between rich, industrialized nations and the "poor periphery" of the 3rd world. Williamson's conclusion is that it did and he identifies 3 19th century mechanisms contributing to this divergence. The first was de-industrialization. In a nice example of Ricardian comparative advantage in trade, European industrialization resulted in declining costs of manufactures and enormously increased demand for primary products. Coupled with markedly declining transport costs, this encouraged metropolitan specialization in manufacture and peripheral specialization in primary products (grain, mining output, etc.), with a large net loss of proto-industrial manufacturing in the periphery. This pattern also increased inequality in the periphery, eroding or precluding the development of institutions that would favor industrial growth through the empowerment of local elites or colonial overlords who focused on rent-seeking as opposed to industrial or proto-industrial development. Finally, the pattern of industrial core - peripheral primary producer enhanced peripheral susceptibility to volatile commodity price fluctuations which modern experience has shown to inhibit long-term growth. Williamson is careful to specify that the huge expansion of trade in the 19th century globalization did increase economic growth everywhere, as predicted by classic Ricardian theory, but that there were qualitatively different consequences of this growth in the primary producer periphery and the industrial core with the trade boom of globalization markedly reducing the peripheral potential for industrialization and long-term robust growth.

This is a short but reasonably dense book. Williamson is summarizing a great deal of prior research which relied on a variety of econometric analyses. He is a solid writer. Some technical terminology is used but its not hard to master. Williamson also presents and relies on a couple of relatively simple but not necessarily intuitive economic models for some of his analysis. These require a bit of effort to understand but are not terribly difficult either. A great deal of the analysis is presented in charts and table which enhance understanding but this is not the usual historical monograph.

Considering the volume of information presented, its hard to fault Williamson for not doing more, but some historical contextualization would have been illuminating. The processes he describes were not inevitable and often the result of deliberate and aggressive imperialism and should be placed against the background of successful 18th century mercantilism. I think Williamson may have missed some opportunities to expand the analysis. For example, his arguments about the mechanisms of globalization induced peripheral growth impairment would be strengthened by the existence of an exception that proves the rule. There is such a exception; the 19th century USA. The USA pursued aggressive tariff protection, had stable and relatively powerful governments that invested in education and physical infrastructure, and as David Hounshell has shown, an effective albeit inadvertant Federal industrial R&D policy. The USA had the advantage of being a relatively rich country at the beginning of the 19th century but a relatively favorable starting point doesn't always help as shown by the 20th century experience of Argentina or contemporary Russia. The increasing concentration on primary production in the periphery with the strong tendency to specialize in a few primary products also had other serious consequences such as the desctruction of somewhat diversified peasant agriculture in parts of Asia with increasing risk of famine. The Pattern of Benefits from Global Trade in the 1800s

Prof. Williamson's summary of many admirable empirical studies of global trade and patterns of income growth in the 1800s leavens a great deal of cleverness with a certain amount of wisdom.

The clever part is seeing how economists' traditional, neoclassical trade theory can be used to explain relative changes in incomes received by owners of mines and plantations, on the one hand, and incomes of manufacturers, on the other hand, during the great expansion in global trade between roughly 1820 and 1913.

It is not very surprising that mine and plantation owners in regions that expanded trade with Britain gained much more than traditional manufacturers did, as the vastly improved British manufacturing industry added to demand for inputs from mines and plantations while competing successfully for the traditional manufacturers' markets. The concentration of wage income in traditional manufacturing sufficed to hold the benefits from expanded trade accruing to common workers below the benefits received by wealthy mine and plantation owners.

Williamson's ability to reproduce this unsurprising pattern of results with the mathematical trade model sketched on pages 55-57 is at least a partial vindication of the effort put into thousands of basic trade theory courses taught in Economics Departments over the decades.

The wisdom in Trade and Poverty comes in distinguishing the forest from the trees. Williamson does not lose sight of the fact that, with all their divergences, incomes rose in all regions, and indeed makes a point of mentioning it repeatedly (belying the possible inference from the book's title that poverty only arose when the Third World traded). He also makes it clear that trade in the period he focuses on is not the whole of the story. Looking back, he notes that Britain's ability to drive change in the 1800s, and the divergence between "core" and "periphery" incomes more generally, derived from a centuries-long process dating back to the Middle Ages. Looking forward, he notes that the rest of the world has made the transition from the 1800s' episode to an entirely different position as of the date of the book's publication in 2011.

Most importantly, Williamson properly identifies "education, capital goods, R&D, and learning by doing" (rather than trade, or its absence) as the motors of industrial development (pages 228-229). Hopefully, his readers will take his point, rather than imagining that isolation provides an alternative for late-industrializing regions. (I am a little surprised that Williamson does not refer the reader to a good study of trade and industry policy, like that of Little, Scitovsky, and Scott.)
