Greenup County, bordering the Ohio River in northeast Kentucky, is rich in history and culture. Settlers first arrived in the mid-1700s and carved farms from the hardwood forests. Lucy Virgin Downs, the first white child born west of the Alleghenies, lived in Greenup County, as did Jesse Boone, brother of Kentucky icon Daniel Boone. The 20th century brought industrialization and economic diversification to the historically agricultural area. Ashland Oil, a Fortune 500 company, maintained corporate headquarters in Greenup County. Two steel mills, a large rail yard, an excellent hospital, and a number of surface mines also provided employment to many people who continued to work their family farms, too. This economic progress was mirrored in every aspect of county life as education, health care, and recreation all improved dramatically. Today Greenup County's history is appreciated by both longtime residents and cultural tourists.

Very prominent Greenup County resident left out.

This book contains many interesting photos and tidbits of history of Greenup County Kentucky that will probably interest someone like me who was raised there. Although my Aunt Becky Bates is featured in a photo described as the daughter of Joe B. Bates, a well know politician, there is nothing written about him or his contribution to Greenup County. As his granddaughter and because I loved and admired him so much, I felt compelled to write this review and brief biography. The Honorable Joseph B. Bates taught and conducted a Normal School (a two year training school for teachers) in Greenup. He was High School Superintendent of Raceland, Kentucky 1917-1919. In 1921 he was elected county clerk and served four terms_ sixteen years. In 1936 he was elected to the Seventy-fifth Congress to fill the congressional seat of Fred Vinson who was appointed Supreme Court Justice. He was elected to eight more terms from the district where he served until 1953 in Washington, D.C. He was instrumental in getting the construction of the Greenup Lock and Dam and Greenbo Lake. This is just a sampling of many contributions Joe B. Bates made to Greenup County, the state of Kentucky and to the service of his country as a statesman. He spent the later years of his life practicing law and being a mentor to other political hopefuls in Greenup, Kentucky. He was married to Virginia Rice of Wurtland, Kentucky. They raised their son, my father, Joseph Rice Bates and daughter, Becky Bates Vinson in Greenup. His children raised their families there as well. My grandfather, Joe B. Bates was a very important and prominent figure in Greenup County and certainly deserves more than barely a mention in a book that is suppose to present "distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today".

One Flaw
By Jeffrey G. Riggs
Overall, it is a good read for those interested in Eastern KY. history especially the city of Greenup. One detail is not accurate though. The cabin at the Greenup County Fair Grounds was not built by Daniel Boone. It was built by Grandaddy (David?) Myers from the mouth of route 2. There are still too many people alive that knew who built it and
watched it being moved for this hoax to work.

A fun book to read.

I love the book. Many Greenup County photographs that have been here and there but not quite together. Good to see. I will say that the Biggs History of Greenup was off base quite a bit, but this book is just fun. Makes a Greenup Countian Proud. Though Jesse Boone was Daniel's son, not brother. Thanks again!
