Hailing from suburban Los Angeles, raised by supportive parents, and educated at a boys-only parochial school, Darryl Henley had it all. He earned a history degree from UCLA, became a first-team All American for the Bruins in 1988, and was a rising star as the starting cornerback for the LA Rams in the early nineties. How Henley, in the space of three short years, went from golden NFL role model to federal inmate is one of the most bizarre stories in the annals of sport-stars-turned-criminal.
The product of eight years of investigative research and over one hundred interviews, Intercepted takes us into Henley’s fourth season in the NFL, when he met Rams cheerleader Tracy Donaho and bumped into a boyhood friend named Willie McGowan, a onetime youth-league standout who had since turned to drug trafficking. Henley, Donaho, and McGowan embark on a scheme to transport cocaine that lands Henley in federal prison, where he attempts to arrange a Mafia hit on the sentencing judge and Donaho, who had been the star witness against Henley at his trial. Detailing how one of the best and brightest of our professional athletes destroyed himself through temptation, arrogance, and anger at a justice system that he felt had failed him, Intercepted is also a cautionary tale about American culture, as disturbing as it is impossible to ignore.

Review
“Capturing the inner life of an NFL player is challenging enough. Revealing the torment, hubris, and shame that marked Darryl Henley’s downfall is a task that only the bravest reporter could undertake.”—Adam Schefter, NFL reporter for ESPN
(Adam Schefter 2012-03-16)
“[Intercepted is] engrossing, heartbreaking, uplifting—and dynamic. A fantastic book.”—Jeff Pearlman, author of the New York Times bestseller Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton
(Jeff Pearlman 2012-03-16)
“This tormented tale of hubris and corruption, loaded with seedy characters, reads like a legal thriller. But McKnight’s thorough examination of former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Darryl Henley’s sordid fall from grace is a cautionary all-too-real story of sex, drugs, and murder. . . . Sports Illustrated writer McKnight’s meticulous research and attention to detail nearly indicts the U.S. justice system and its own glaring flaws.”—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly 2014-02-06)
“As Henley once asked himself rhetorically, ‘How can you get bored with money, women, football, cameras, TV?’ . . . In the end what proved the fatal flaw of a man who looked as if he should have succeeded in the NFL and beyond? William Kopeny, an attorney who helped Henley’s defense team, offered McKnight this explanation: ‘Vanity and cool. . . . That’s the only thing I can come up with. Vanity and cool.’”—Bill Littlefield, Boston Globe (Boston Globe 2014-02-06)
“A legal/mystery novel with a compelling tale of both justice and injustice of our legal system. There were definitely two sides to this story of Henley.”—Gridiron Greats Book Review
(Gridiron Greats Book Review 2014-02-06)
“[A] crime story page-turner.”—Library Journal (Library Journal 2014-02-06)

Touchdown!
By william
My bias is I attended the subject High School and played football with two of the three Henley brothers.
That said, the well researched book explores the dysfunctional workings of our inept U.S. legal system and how celebrity & money control society. The drama starts innocently enough as a man, Mr. Thomas Henley relocates his young family from Texas to the volatile city of Baldwin Village in LA in search for work and the American Dream. The Drama unfolds as Mr. Henley and his wife Dot raise three gifted children that become remarkable athletes. The second son, while reaching a pinnacle playing for the LA Rams, sadly becomes involved in a drug trafficking conspiracy. From this point on, the plot builds and the author demonstrates a "perfect storm" of events that ultimately brings the pro football star Darryl Henley into Federal Prison.

definitely not a brilliant intellect at work here
By norm cash bukowski
This is a fascinating book. Close to 500 pages on a drug case involving a relatively obscure NFL player. It should be five stars but because of the author's inexplicable leniency and continued attempts to bend over backwards to portray Henley as naive or even a victim, I had to nick a star. Some of the despicable things Darryl did include cheating on all kinds of girlfriends and women, possibly women who might have deserved this based on their own starstruck, grasping SoCal mentality. His cheerleader conspirator was attracted by some designer clothes he was wearing, definitely not a brilliant intellect at work here. At the end, involving his brother in a heroin deal and ultimate jail sentence involving a plea deal that Darryl engineered to minimize his own sentence, in spite of the fact that his brother might have beaten the rap at trial indicates to me that the guy is fundamentally a narcissist and probably "evil". Had absolutely no problem when a juror proposed bribing another juror and never reported this approach to the court. A typical spoiled athlete who never grew up and never really developed any form of mature impulse control. At the end, I was practically bored with his repeated stupidity and utter lack of any moral or ethical core.

This is a story about race, Los Angeles, the American legal system, and oh yeah...football
By joshuaneuman
McKnight paints a fascinating portrait of a Los Angeles that simultaneously feels so close and so far away: a Los Angeles torn asunder by the O.J. Simpson trial and where humdrum facts all too often take a backseat to Hollywood fictions. Admittedly, I'm a huge LA RAMS fan, but this book communicates a story that is so much larger than the arena of the gridiron. Its protagonist is portrayed not as a monster, but as a flawed and multi-dimensional character. This book will make you laugh and it will make you weep. It will make you think differently about Los Angeles, the American legal system and sheer, dumb luck. It belongs in the library of anyone who loves reading about the intersection of sports and society.
