A very interesting book.

I've often read about the Third Avenue Railway System but very little about the others. That is what this book covers and it was very interesting. Lots of good photos, too. The book, like the others of this series, is of a somewhat smaller format than typical for this type of book.

Manhattan's Streetcars Live Again - In Memory

Author/Editor Meyers has presented a rare and remarkable assemblage of photos of the time when Manhattan's population traveled on electric streetcars. He adds concise text that adds greatly to the enjoyment of the reader by answering the who, what and why. New York City was one of the few in the United States that mandated against the erection of overhead wires to power electric cars in most of the borough of Manhattan. The cost and maintenance of conduit delivery of electric power for the cars greatly increased company expense. The politically enforced five cent fare led to the relatively early conversion of all Manhattan streetcar lines to buses to cut losses. In time, the buses were taken over by the city and the five cent fare faded from memory. The bus and the auto will never be an adequate replacement for the open streetcars of summer and the comfortable, spacious closed cars of winter. This fine book shows Manhattan surface travel as it was in our grandparents day.
