Not At All Like William W. Johnstone's Books

This book shows the big difference in these stories after Mr. Johnstone died. The action writing is pretty good, but the descriptions of the country side, the mosques, the bombed out buildings, etc. just go on & on & on. Mr. Johnstone always wrote good, brief descriptions & great character development. Both are lacking in this book. No character development, terrible descriptions & not much of a story line. I love these so-called
"men's books" & that is one of the reasons I read most of Mr. Johnstones work (minus the westerns). The books co-written by J. A. Johnstone are pretty good. They follow the original writer very well in most cases. Although I don't know why that author can include W. W. Johnstone as an author of these books since so many are written after his death. Anyway, this book is not great by any means & was a big disappointment.

A good read

I have been a Johnstone fan since the 1980's. The first book of his that I ever read was The Last of the Dog Team. Johnstone has a style that is direct and fast paced. I am also a writer and like to think that Johnstone is a huge influence on how I write my own books. My own series Death Spiral was influenced by what I learned from reading Johnstone.
In this book Kilroy, the son of the main character from The Dog team is following in his fathers footsteps. The bad guys get killed and the good guys win the day. Another great read by this author is Out of the Ashes.

... adventure books that should be read because it is fun to read

This is one of those adventure books that should be read because it is fun to read. Any attempt to go beyond that will take the enjoyment away from it. It was a great summer read and one that I would recommend to anyone who just wants to get into a book that you can't put down. The plot may be shallow, the characters a bit too predictable, the issues somewhat slanted. Put that aside and just have fun. (FJR)
