About the Author
After moving to the Chattanooga area, Gay Morgan Moore developed an interest in the community's unique history. The images in this book are from a variety of sources, including the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library archives. Many of the families whose ancestors are included also graciously contributed photographs. This is Moore's second book for Arcadia Publishing. The first, Images of America: Canton was published in 2009 and features Moore's Ohio hometown.

I enjoy attending the Friends of Forest Hills Cemetery reenactment of prominent Chattanooga citizens buried in the cemetery each October. Now in addition, I can explore on my own or research people not being featured that year.

Pictures in the book are interesting, but some are so old and faded you can barely make out what the photo is supposed to be. My daughter was going to use this for a school project of Iowa, but because of the quality of the photos changed her mind.

Best Romance book I have ever read

This is one good book! Carolyn Hughey is absolutely my favorite romance author. I don't normally read romance novels but my wife recommended this one and said she heard that "Men who read romance novels make better lovers.." After I read this book, my wife heartily agrees. Men, don't waste another minute, read this book!

Shut and kiss me is a well written story about a strong and connected Italian family girl who's been in love with her childhood who never saw her in the same light. Add two meddling mothers to the mix and you get a fun and tasteful story that has you turning the page to find out what happens next! But the main thing that makes me very fond of this book written by Carolyn Hughey, is that she is providing the age old wisdom to never place all of your eggs in one basket, because the thing your heart desires the most may not be the thing you are obsessing over. That real life quality makes this story unique, because our flaw is we can become so focused on one thing, we shadow over what's right in front of us, and make critical decisions based on what we believe we want from life. I recommend this book if you would like to see something different in a story, that's not always unbelievable and see a strong support system from family and friends to help you reach your goal.

Any good reader has, well, had it with novels of healing. The culture of confession has given rise to novels that begin with an unspeakable act (graphically described) and end in redemption (this part is usually more vague). That's not how it works in J.L. Carr's quiet, brief, dreamy A Month in the Country. Writing in 1978, Carr's narrator, Tom Birkin, recalls the summer of 1920. A veteran of the Great War and a cuckold, Tom arrives in Oxgodby to restore a medieval mural in the church. His single season in this town in the north of England passes quickly: he sleeps in the belfry, makes a friend or two, falls secretly in love with the vicar's wife, and, chipping away at plaster and dirt, uncovers a lost masterpiece. These events seem to melt past Tom in the heat of the perfect, fleeting English summer: "The front gardens of cottages were crammed with marjoram and roses, marguerites, sweet William, at night heavy with the scent of stocks. The Vale was heavy with leaves, motionless in the early morning, black caves of shadow in the midday heat, blurring the sound of trains hammering north and south."

Carr devotes many fewer words to Tom's time in the war. The vicar's wife tries to ask him about it. "'What about hell on earth?' she said. I told her I'd seen it and lived there and that, mercifully, they usually left an exit open." His healing consists of not talking about his past--perhaps a revolutionary notion these days. A Month in the Country, with its paean to a lost, good place, oddly recalls Alain-Fournier's Le Grand Meaulnes. But where that novel was elliptical, Carr's work values clarity and simplicity above all. These are rare enough qualities, but to find them in a novel of romance and healing is a rarer pleasure still. --Claire Dederer

Haunted by his experiences in the trenches of World War I and recovering from a divorce, Birkin accepts a job restoring a medieval mural of the apocalypse in a church located in a remote corner of Yorkshire. It is here, however, that Birkin, though alone with only an interpretation of the world's end for company, learns to live again. Carr's small gem of a novel was first published in 1980.

A short but wonderful novel

A Month in the Country is unrelated (as far as I can tell) to the Turgenyev piece of the same name. It is, however, a wonderful book, made into a decent movie about 6 years ago, I believe.
It tells the story of Tom Birkin, recently returned from WW I, who goes to the town of Oxgodby to restore a medieval wall-painting in an old church. Over the course of his time there, he gets absorbed into the life of the town, falls in love, learns (and reveals) something about the nature of art, and the healing power of both art and love.
That makes it sound as if the book's some sort of mushy new-age blather, and it's not at all. It's a short and profoundly entertaining novel. I would have loved to have been assigned this in a high-school english class, because (1) Carr's vocabulary is remarkable, and the occasional strange words he uses are worth looking up (e.g., "sneck"), and (2) it has a lot of the sort of structure that one is forced to write about in English classes ("contrast the relationship between Birkin and his work with that between Moon and his...") but which in this book actually contributed something to the story -- there are multiple parallel threads in the book, and their inteweaving makes it richer. I could've written a decent essay about that...

Tender, nostaligic, haunting

The main theme of this charming novel is how important it is to understand the irretrievable passage of time and to savor the good times that come along. The narrator tells the story of an enchanted summer he spent in Cornwall uncovering an ancient painting in a country church. He looks back upon this time (1920) as one of the most wonderful, important periods of his life. He meets several villagers who make an indelible impression upon him and pleas with us to appreciate our own little "months in the country"--those days when things are going well. Such a good, kind, fully-alive character. I was moist-eyed by the final pages (it's a very short novel) and didn't want it to end. Sweet, powerful, and as lovely as a summer day in the country.

This is one of those works of art that falls into a category of its own. Carr's writing is impeccable and it took on a magical quality where the past and future were perfectly brought together through the voice of the protagonist Tom Birkin. I'm on my fourth reading of it.

Informative reading and some great historic shots of Loudoun

Here is a great book if your looking for an enjoyable read. The author reveals some info of the airport acquisition details and how 87 families and 300 structures were moved, burned down or bulldozed to make way for the airport. A nice pictures look at the surrounding areas or towns that have long been forgotten and the houses that went with them.

Eventual Successful Foresight!

Arguably the title of this book should be changed to " The Families, Farms and Villages of Loudon and Fairfax County, Virginia" as affected by the construction of the Washington Dulles International Airport as that is approximately fifty percent of the book's contents. The Washington Airport Act of 1950 passed by the United States Congress was the formalization of the realization that the City of Washington, D.C. needed a new internationally capable airport not only for the needs of lt's own citizens, but, as well for international travelers coming to our nations capital as tourists and with governmental business as well as regular business interests. Air travel was on the cusp of the Jet Age, an additional recognition that new or greatly modified airports were necessary to handle this new aircraft. No other airport in the area was believed capable nor expandable to offer such aircraft service. In 1958 President Eisenhower chose the site at Chantilly, Virginia. The Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen was selected to design the initial terminal, control tower and related facilities. The initial design was forward thinking and unique when compared to other airports in existence at the time, as it was virtually an entire airport operational system. There was to be one main terminal building containing ticketing, baggage handling, check-in, and all related facilities for departing and arriving passengers. Aircraft would be parked on a remote tarmac for all servicing requirements while passengers would be transported to and from the aircraft on mobile lounges from the main terminal building. These mobile lounges had special docking facilities at the main terminal and were of such height that when arriving at the aircraft they simply parked where an integral ramp allowed the passengers to walk directly onto the aircraft at the same level. When the bigger and higher off the ground wide body aircraft arrived in the 1970's, new mobile lounges were designed that could raise and lower themselves so that they could dock at the terminal and then raise themselves to the height of the particular aircraft when arriving at it's location on the tarmac. The Chrysler Corporation won the competition to design and manufacture these mobile lounges. The main terminal was also designed with a double level access road in front for departing passengers on the upper level and and arriving passengers on the lower level, another new recognition of the need for this type of separation of passengers. A man made lake was put in place to collect rain water. Further more the remote location of this new airport required a new limited access highway of seventeen miles to connect the airport to the Capital Beltway, I-495, and then to other major highways in the region. This new highway was also designed with a center separation of the lanes to permit the future expansion of the Washington METRO to service the airport. This access is currently under construction. The new Dulles International Airport was dedicated by President Kennedy on November 17, 1962, in the presence of former President Eisenhower. After the airport's opening and for some several years following there was concern of it's being a White Elephant as it received virtually no internal air traffic, but, international traffic mainly as it's remote and distant location from the City was a perceived inconvenience. However as the years progressed just the opposite scenario developed. In 1984 the airport name was changed to Washington Dulles International Airport. The close in Washington Reagan Airport became slot constricted and international traffic developed to the point that even the advanced design of Dulles required modification. The initial remote aircraft servicing facility on the tarmac was redeveloped into a full service passenger Concourse, A and B, connected to the main terminal by an underground tram way system, Aero Train. A second such concourse, to be temporary, C and D, has been constructed connected by a shuttle system. The interior of the main terminal was reconfigured and the building itself was expanded to more than double by additions to both ends which additions were identical to the original design. Direct aircraft access was also added to the main terminal by a connected addition of a main terminal concourse. The use of the mobile lounges may be eventually terminated. A fourth runway has been constructed and a fifth runway is in the planning stages. The airport is now a hub for one major airline and a focus city for another. Also today the airport has daily scheduled B747-8 and A380 service. This reviewer transited through Dulles Airport late one July evening in 1968, after midnight, flying from JFK to Dallas on a return trip from a family visit to Norway. We did not even exit our aircraft and one mobile lounge delivered some additional passengers for the continuing flight to Dallas. A year or so later I arrived and departed from Dulles airport during my employment with the United States Treasury Department. Several such trips were made during my nine years of service with the Treasury. The original and expanded main Saarinen terminal is arguably the most beautiful, striking airport terminal in the world. The primary air gate way to any nation's capital should be so distinctive!

For clients with serious illness for whom conventional massage can cause discomfort or even injury, Mary Kathleen Rose's Comfort Touch® approach offers a way of giving safe, effective and compassionate care in a variety of settings, including hospice, hospital, skilled nursing facility and at home. Comfort Touch is based on six guiding principles: slow rhythm; comfort from inner strength; respect for the client; connecting into the center; broad even pressure; and encompassing wholeness. The techniques are derived from Shiatsu and acupressure, minus the application of deep thumb or finger pressure that could be hurtful to these clients. In this book, you will find detailed information about the physical and emotional needs of elderly clients, as well as clients with chronic illness and/or injury. Chapters on how to position and bolster frail clients, how to document sessions, and how to develop a Comfort Touch program in a facility are included along with chapters on infection control, aromatherapy considerations and essential self-care. As more and more of our population ages, it will become vitally important for increasing numbers of massage therapists to develop these skills. This book is a great resource.

Comfort Touch should be in the library of anyone doing hands-on work with the elderly and the frail, especially nurses and massage therapists. It offers some of the most practical and easy to understand guidance that I've found for providing a shiatsu-based comforting touch to seriously ill and end-of-life clients. I really appreciate Mary Rose's emphasis on the client rather than the medical condition. Her unique perspective on palliative massage has aided me in working with many older clients as well as family members as they near death. Thank you Mary!

About the Author
Dr. Roberts serves as Chairman and the Katharine Dexter McCormick and Stanley McCormick Memorial Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

She is an internationally recognized scholar in bioethics, psychiatry, medicine, and medical education, and is identified as a foremost psychiatric ethicist in the United States. Dr. Roberts has received extensive scientific peer-reviewed funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Energy, and private foundations to perform empirical studies of modern ethical issues in research, clinical care, and health policy, with a particular focus on vulnerable and special populations. Her work has led to advances in understanding of ethical aspects of physical and mental illness research, societal implications for genetic innovation, the role of stigma in health disparities, the impact of medical student and physician health issues, and optimal approaches to fostering professionalism in medicine.

Dr. Roberts has been the Editor-in-Chief for the journal Academic Psychiatry since 2002 and serves as an editorial board member and peer reviewer for many scientific and education journals.   Dr. Roberts was the first woman to be elected President of the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry. Dr. Roberts has received numerous awards for leadership, teaching, and science.

Great text for personal trainers.

This text is worth it. It covers a variety of subjects with a no nonsense approach. What you need to know is in this textbook: Physiology responses and adaptations, strength training and conditioning program designs... It's good enough for me, it is easy to understand. If you choose only one text book this would be it. You can't go wrong with this.

This book is outstanding. Very technical at times and sometimes very dry reading as it really covers alot of physiology. I would highly recommend this book for individuals who are interested in learning about muscles, nerves, strength training, and conditioning.

In compiling this useful research tool, Davis (Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) draws on a deep knowledge of jazz. The 1,500-plus entries include important musicians, terms, places, and events. While terms such as "Blues" and "Bebop" are afforded short entries, "Jazz" does not appear in the dictionary proper. Instead, Davis provides a brief but informative introductory essay outlining the origins and history of jazz. Typical entries are short, highlighting careers of various figures, discussing the importance of places and events, and offering general descriptions of concepts. Longer entries, such as "Armstrong, Louis," can run several paragraphs, detailing performances, contributions, and influence. Content spans the gamut of jazz from its early influences in blues and popular entertainment to its contemporary manifestations. With more than 1,500 brief, alphabetically arranged, and cross-referenced entries, this book covers
everything from slave songs to brass bands to contemporary jazz. Also featured are the influences of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, European classical music, and the Mississippi blues. Entries are devoted to influential performers and bandleaders, noteworthy venues, seminal recordings, popular record labels, and various jazz styles—bebop, swing, etc. The volume begins with a chronology starting in 1881, is followed by an introductory essay, and ends with an extensive bibliography. About the Author
John S. Davis is Director of Jazz Studies and Associate Dean for the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder. He has been a jazz educator for more than 20 years and maintains an active schedule as a jazz clinician and guest conductor.

A Must Have

Covers everything you would expect in a dictionary of Jazz. Clear, concise, and eloquently written. Great that one of the leaders of jazz education took the time to compile such a comprehensive treatise. A must have for all students of jazz!
