About the Author
Michael Clarke is currently the Director of the Royal United Services Institute. Until July 2007 he was the Deputy Vice-Principal and Director of Research Development at King's College London, where he remains a Visiting Professor of Defence Studies. He was the founding Director of the International Policy Institute at King's College London from 2001-2005 and Head of the School of Social Science and Public Policy at KCL in 2004-05. He was, from 1990 to 2001, the founding Director of the Centre for Defence Studies at King's. He was appointed as Professor of Defence Studies in 1995.

Useful studies of Britain's recent strategic disasters

NATO should have withdrawn from Afghanistan in 2001 after its military successes of defeating and dispersing al-Qaeda, and ousting the Taliban government.
The further step, of imposing a `political solution' on the country, was a step too far. From the start, Blair wrongly said that fighting the war against terror `requires nation-building'. This arrogant dream was always impossible to achieve. It is utterly unrealistic to think that outside forces can create a liberal democracy of Afghanistan.
General Sir Robert Fry and Desmond Bowen write, "If there is a single defining error in Western grand strategy in the campaigns we have fought in Central and Western Asia since 2001, it is the Iraq invasion of 2003. Its perceived illegitimacy infected operations in Afghanistan in a way that even US President Barack Obama's more recent `good war/dumb war' dichotomy would not fix; it created a profound strategic distraction for the US; it broke NATO Alliance unity; and it created a jihadist pretext. It also focused the residual US force elements in Afghanistan under national command on a counter-terrorism campaign, which became increasingly distanced from NATO operations and ran the risk of compromising both."
Actually, there was no `single defining error', but a whole series of errors: the occupation of Afghanistan since 2001, the occupation of Iraq, committing Britain to war in Helmand, the unnecessary hostility to Iran, the abject support for Israel ...
Clarke writes in his conclusion, "Why the UK, of all countries, should take on this galvanising role in Afghanistan if the US could not, or would not, goes to the heart of the way the system works to give effect to political direction on defence and security questions, especially where the United States is concerned. It arose because a consensus in the policy machinery regarded it as axiomatic that the UK should seek to play a strategically significant role in US policy; not just to make a useful contribution, but to be a consequential ally - one that could make things happen in the world."
Britain would be far better off if we stopped trying to play a strategically significant role in the world.
