Ijams Nature Center, on the banks of the Tennessee River, evolved from humble beginnings during the early 20th century into a natural showplace known as the Island Home Bird Sanctuary. Developed by Harry Ijams, Knoxville's leading ornithologist, and Alice Yoe Ijams, "First Lady of Knoxville Garden Clubs," the Ijams property has been a gathering point for birders and nature-lovers for more than a century. Girl Scouting has been a fixture at Ijams since 1923, followed by Camp Mary Ijams, and Camp Margaret Townsend in the Smokies was created in part through Ijams and Townsend family ties. Harry Ijams also helped establish the first official campsite on Mount LeConte and used his artistry as a commercial illustrator to promote the Smoky Mountains as a national park. Over the years, Ijams Nature Center has grown in size and stature to become the region's leading wildlife sanctuary and environmental learning center incorporating Mead's Quarry, which in its heyday produced Tennessee marble used both in local buildings and national monuments.

Long lost history told in vintage photos

Any good book tells a story that's worth telling. This book about the roots of Ijams Nature Center documents a little known story about one family's commitment to conservation.
I've seen several of these Arcadia "Images of America" photo books. Most seem to be just collections of old pictures. But this one tells a story. It's about H.P. and Alice Ijams, East Tennessee's original "green" family.
The outdoorsy pair dedicated their lives to nature and environmental education, raising four daughters: Elizabeth, Jo, Mary and Martha to be good stewards of the earth. The family of six were dedicated environmentalists, long before that term was even part of our lexicon. They built ponds, planted gardens, constructed woodland trails and set up bird boxes, creating habitat and turning the family's 20 acres into a wildlife sanctuary at a time when few people were thinking about actually conserving parcels of land in their natural state. And their refuge still exists today.
But the Ijams family did more than live in Thoreauian seclusion in their idyllic, private Walden, they were also active in the community, especially in the growing new Girl Scout and garden club movements, plus they were very involved in the establishment of the local bird club and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
James did an excellent job of research, pulling together almost 200 historic photographs that capture the real spirit of an era and a remarkable family.
