When I first moved to the east coast of Virginia I bought a huge map to find my way around. It didn't take long to discover the Great Dismal Swamp, just west of my home in Chesapeake. I soon fell in love with this isolated, fascinating swamp. Once owned by George Washington, later used by runaway slaves in transit on the Underground Railroad, the Dismal Swamp has a long and exciting history (for example, whaling ships used its waters on their long sea voyages because it was believed to have special health properties). Yet today you can wander a few miles into it and be completely alone. But keep an eye open behind you. One never knows what you might run into...

A good read

I am not normally a big reader of mysteries, but this one kept me engaged because of its characters and setting, as well as a clever little surprise at the end. The main character, Greg, who hails from my hometown of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was tough, but vulnerable enough to be interesting, and his relationship with an older FBI man provided some good dialogue. The Dismal Swamp is in a sense a character in the novel, and after reading it I'd really like to visit. The local references and the references to Northeastern Pennsylvania will be of special interest to some readers. Also a good read for the green crowd.

Delightful!

I am not a mystery fan for the most part, but I have to say, this book is a delight threaded with humor and that old "Dick Tracy" feel!! The characters are full and real. I enjoyed getting to know them yet,they were not overly predictable. The descriptions of the Dismal Swamp were realistic enough for me to want to go visit it. It is an entertaining story. I loved it and I am looking forward to Mr. Balester's next novel!!!

GREAT CAST OF CHARACTERS

This was a different kind of mystery, and the interaction between the characters is well done. Interesting local, and interesting mystery. Also interesting inter play between the Wild Life Officer and the FBI, quite refreshing actually.
Not a major novel, but one you will enjoy reading it's nice to read a mystery that isn't a rehash of everyone else's novel.
