This work highlights his life as educator, pastor, abolitionist, poet, historiographer, hymn writer, ecumenist, and bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Payne was a strong voice for the freedom of his enslaved brothers and sisters of color as well as a vociferous supporter of general and theological education. Upon his election as president of Wilberforce University in Ohio in 1863, Payne became the first African American to lead an institution of higher education in the United States. In addition to exploring his work within the United States, this biography highlights and includes sources from Payne’s travels, work, and reception in nineteenth century Europe.

Nelson T. Strobert is professor of Christian education in the Paulssen Hale Chair for Church and Society and director of multicultural studies at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Religious Education Association, the American Academy of Religion, and the Conference of International Black Lutherans.

Some time ago,I had decided to download this book to my Kindle. I had some other priorities for reading so I did not attend to reading this piece, written by one of our Lutheran Pastors, the Rev. Dr. Nelson Strobert.
I finally made some time to read the book. I began this book and completed it in one week.
It was so rivoting.
I found the time to read, a chapter at a time and was looking forward to the encounter with the life of this great preacher, educator, bishop and social giant, who also happened to study theologically at one of the seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Gettysburg.
I appreciated so much the clarity and simple way the author presented the material. The facility of presenting would serve anyone who had a desire to learn something new about history in general and Black history in particular.
