The Presidio of Monterey is best known as the home of the post-World War II Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, the Department of Defense's acknowledged leader in foreign language training. It has, however, a much longer and rich history. After the United States seized Monterey in 1846, the U.S. Army began constructing Fort Mervine, which served a number of purposes until it was abandoned in 1866. In 1902-1903, a modern cantonment was built in the area. In 1904, the new post was officially renamed the Presidio of Monterey after a nearby Spanish fort established in 1770 that had fallen into disuse. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the post was home to infantry and cavalry regiments, as well as an inductee reception center. The Military Intelligence Service Language School was moved to the Presidio of Monterey in 1946 and renamed the Army Language School in 1947; this evolved into the present-day Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center.

Incredible Images of an Ever-Changing Landscape

Being able to walk around Monterey and see the sights of this amazingly beautiful and diverse area we live in will only add to the enjoyment of the images encapsulated in this book. From its humble beginnings as a Spanish fort (1770-1822), to the Mexican occupation (1822-1846), and into the United States (1846 to present day), this little spit of land has seen a lot of activity - and a bit of fame.
James Doolittle (of the Doolittle raiders) was on-hand at The Presidio in April of 1988 during a WW II commemoration ceremony. And with him came Brig. General James (Jimmy) Stewart (you know him, right?).
If you've ever wondered how certain roads in and around The Presidio got their names (Giggling, Bolio, etc.), you'll get some keen insights about where they came from. If you've ever wanted to know what The Presidio looked like before 1950, this book will show you some great images; including soldiers in full dress.
My only beef with the book was that I felt it was a bit too heavy in pictures and didn't have enough historical information. I know, I know. The title of the book is "Images of America". But still, I would've liked a tiny bit more detail about the area to round out the flavor of the times.
But great images. You'd be hard-pressed to find another book out there with the picture quality of this one.

Loved the old POM photos!

Loved the old and newer photos of POM (Presidio of Monterey, CA), where I was stationed in 1979-80. Recognized some of the old buildings that are still there I think. My only criticism is wish there were many more photos! This could have been about 5 times the number of photos I think!

Great Pictorial History!

While the Presidio of Monterey has been home to the prestigious Defense Language Institute since the 1940s, it also has a much richer and earlier history as a cavalry post, and even featured Ronald Reagan filming a movie there in the 1930s! Every page opens up a new window into history, and I continue to be enthralled by this pictorial volume. It makes a great addition to everyone's library, especially for anyone connected in any way to the DLI and POM!
