Yes, just about all of us would like to learn more about Denver, and no, most of us don't have the time to take a guided tour through all of the different parts of the city.
Thankfully, a series of Denver historical books being published by Images of America does an incredible job of providing a glimpse of what the city was like during its formative years. And with two new books from the collection being released next Monday Ń "Denver's Capitol Hill Neighborhood" and "Denver City Park and Whittier Neighborhoods" Ń there will be even more parts of Denver for people to explore within the comforts of their own home.
Shawn M. Snow put "Denver's City Park and Whittier Neighborhoods" together. The collection of stories and photographs captures the Denver area in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The demographic switches that took place during that time and place are intriguing. While the Whittier neighborhood was essentially a white, middle-class area prior to the 1920s, a large number of black people came to the neighborhood as part of the Great Migration of 1916-19. This time of transition and the photos of City Park taken almost 100 years ago are highlights of the book.
"The stories from Whittier and City Park neighborhoods are many and varied," Snow says in the book's introduction. "All of us have stories to tell, but the trick is finding those stories and, in the case of this book, relating them to available photographic evidence."
"Denver's Capitol Hill Neighborhood," which was put together by Amy B. Zimmer, focuses more on the buildings of Capitol Hill in the early 20th century. Similar to City Park and Whittier, Capitol Hill has seen plenty of transformation take place over the past 120 years.
"This diversity of both residents and architecture is what makes Capitol Hill so exciting," says Zimmer in her book. "In 'Denver's Capitol Hill Neighborhood,' I have tried to capture the area's distinct character and to depict the full spectrum of people and places."
Images of America has also put out similar photographic and story collections on Brighton, University Park and South Denver.
About the Author
Author Shawn Snow is a fifth-generation Denverite with a passion for history and historic preservation. He assembled these photographs of Whittier, City Park, and surrounding Denver neighborhoods to relate their history from 1880 to 1950. Sources include the collections of residents Kate Johnson and Gary Kleiner, as well as the archives of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Visual poetry and ideal prose!

I admired the author's effort to represent every aspect of the neighborhood's history, including all the people who were present, not just those groups commonly believed to have been there. Diligent research in facts and pictures. I also liked the creative chapter names, which was fun because you had to read the captions and really think about what was being announced, what was being said. That was pretty cool. The "Our Father Never Left" one was moving; an entire family history, tied in at the last moment with the caption. Priceless. Fun words in the captions, fun pictures. Pictures can sometimes be sterile, but he made it funny and a true representation. Well done, Shawn Snow!
