From Publishers Weekly
The oversize volume The Story of the Titanic by Eric Kentley opens with brief stories of actual passengers; icons assigned to each allow readers to "follow their different fates" as the tragic tale unfolds. Steve Noon's double-page illustrations offer cutaway views of the "Ship of Dreams" and its lavish interiors. Inset text provides a chronology of the events, from loading the ship to the final exodus. Back matter provides a follow-up history (including the individuals introduced at the beginning) as well as a glossary and index.

Gr 3-8-This attractive, oversized book has those details and cross-sections readers have come to expect from DK, with the added bonus of a unique treatment-a search-and-find element. Each spread features one paragraph of text superimposed on a large, colorful drawing of the ill-fated luxury liner. The pictures detail the building of the ship through the rescue of its survivors. Borders contain facts and trivia and duplications of small scenes and figures from within each picture that readers can search for in the spread. Endnotes illustrated with black-and-white photos describe events and inquiries after April 15, 1911, and the fate of the few passengers introduced in the beginning of the book. This book will spend little time on the shelf.

Gr. 4-8. Most library shelves are probably groaning under the weight of books about the Titanic, especially since the release of the blockbuster movie. Yet, this book, with its oversize format, brief, informative text, and large illustrations, will be a first choice for many children. The double-page spreads feature intricate paintings, with cutaway details and cross sections showing the Titanic under construction and also what life was like aboard ship. Several spectacular images depict the ship's going down after its rendezvous with the iceberg. Some of the text sweeps around the outer edges of the pages, which means children will need to turn the book around in order to read the words--no easy task given the book's size. Kids, however, probably won't mind; they'll just enjoy this big, splashy crowd pleaser. Glossary. Todd Morning

A Clever Approach to the Titanic Story
By M. Tennaro
If you are into wonderfully illustrated books, you need to check this one out. Noon is one of the best illustrators to paint the subject in quite a while.
Story of the Titanic is a slender, but oversized 11 by 14 volume. Through out most of the book every two pages open out to a great double page painting; that's (for the mathematically challenged) 11 by 28! These illustrations tell the story with wonderful cutaway drawings of the interior of the ship. The result is a strong sense of what was happening where during the Titanic's fateful voyage. The amount of detail in each image is amazing, so much so that your eyes can just wander over the page, spotting one neat little artistic touch after another.
There is a minor downside to the book, in that the artist's renditions of the ship's interiors are not as accurate as they should be. Not that Noon has placed rooms on the wrong deck, or anything like that, but he has taken liberties with how many of the cabins looked. Apparently this is most extensive in the first class cabins depicted.
I am not an expert on the ship interiors, but an acquaintance of mine who has made this area his specialty stated that Noon makes it look like every first class cabin was a period suite, while in reality only some of the cabins on B and C decks were this elaborate.
There are some other minor transgressions with how the ship is depicted, but none of these glitches are a fatal flaw. Another issue to consider is that the amount of text is very limited. You are definitely buying this book for the art, not the words. Still, I think most kids (and adults, for that matter) would get a kick out of how the story is depicted in these cutaway paintings. Noon's book has catapulted right onto the list of my five favorite children's books on the subject.

Well Done. Factually & Visually Appealing
By Nicola Mansfield
Reason for Reading: I have always been fascinated with the Titanic and am participating in a Titanic Reading Challenge this year.

Just mentioning that this book is published by DK will automatically give you an impression as to what to expect. An oversized, hardcover with a plentiful profusion of illustration and upon the survivor's return photographs and contemporary items such as newspaper headlines. The book takes us on a matter of fact chronological course of events that led up to that fateful night, through the sinking and then finally through photographs of the return of the survivors, the news, the inquiries, short blurbs of some survivors and final information on Ballard's finding of the ship 1985.

Each topic is a two page spread and drawn in cutaways to show the reader the inside of the boat as she stood. The illustration is labeled all over the place, like one of those old Richard Scary word/picture illustrations. Along the top and the bottom of each page are little vignettes of something happening within the large scene and then the reader is supposed to find that little illustration in the larger picture as in a "look-and-find" book. Spending time one will find all sorts of interesting little bits of events going on in the pictures and the occasional humorous one too, like the sailor who happens to be sitting on the toilet in one picture! The pictures are awesome and the cutaways are the perfect way to explore the inside of the ship as we can see where things were situated in comparison to each other.

Though no mention of this is made in the book's copyright page this is a reprinting of an earlier title of the same name. The only difference between this book and the earlier "Story of the Titanic" illustrated by Steve Noon is that the original is a very large, oversized horizontally wide book, making for an extravagant picture book. This book is oversized but only slightly in the vertical direction and obviously it would loose it's extravagance compared to the original. Having never read, nor seen the original I was non the wiser and enjoyed this book for what I got. Kids will especially like the "search and find" interactive component of the book which will have them finding many more hidden treasures in the gorgeous paintings. Recommended mostly for 11 and under.

Great book for kids
By Kimberly
The illustrations in this book are incredibly detailed - my 5-year-old Titanic fan had a blast looking for every little person, room, etc. The text is written to coincide with the elaborate cut-away views of the interior of the ship and encourages the reader to find fun little details, like two steel workers who are sneaking a break during the construction of the giant liner. So it is akin to a Titanic version of "Where's Waldo." We had a blast reading and looking at this great book!
