During the heyday of organized crime in the Prohibition era, Chicago mayor "Big Bill" Thompson and Gov. Len Small were the two most powerful political figures in Illinois. Thompson campaigned on making Chicago "a wide open town" for bootleggers. Small sold thousands of pardons and paroles to criminals, embezzled $1 million, and was then acquitted after mobsters bribed the jury. This book is the story of those Jazz Age politicians whose careers in government thrived on and endorsed corruption and racketeering, from Chicago to Springfield. It complements author Jim Ridings's groundbreaking biography, Len Small: Governors and Gangsters, which was praised by critics and situated Ridings as a trailblazer among Chicago crime authors.

About the Author
Author Jim Ridings won several awards for investigative reporting at daily newspapers in Ottawa and Aurora. His books of local history have won awards from the Illinois State Historical Society. Ridings was presented a Studs Terkel Humanities Award from the Illinois Humanities Council in 2006.

I have listened to numerous stories about crooked Kankakee politicians but this book was a real eye opener. So Small wanted to be King? Read it you will love it, detailed information on Chicago and Kankakee

Not Ready for Reform

This is a valuable addition to the materials contained in the recent biograpy of Governor Len Small, "Governors and Gangsters" by Jim Ridings. While the the title refers to the Roaring Twenties, in truth, the photo selections cover almost a full century of Illinois political corruption at the state capital. Some notorious Chicago politicians are included as well.
The vintage photographs include a few familiar ones, but what I enjoyed most of all were the many rarer and more revealing pictures that the author chose to incorporate into this book. Space limitations must have caused some of these photos to be omitted from the biography of Small, who was one of the most corrupt public officials imagineable. Naturally enough, Small never spent a day in prison. He even stood accused of stealing the silver from the Executive Mansion in Springfield when his term expired!
The photos are accompanied by brief chapter summaries and captions that will assist the reader even if you have not looked at the Small biography yet. Every Illinois citizen and voter ought to read the biography as a civics lesson!
