Color adds a layer of awesome

Since most people that read this edition of Scott Pilgrim will already be familiar with the story, I'm going to review what color does for the story and a bit about the added bonus features.

In some ways I'm a traditionalist and I don't really like the trend of coloring black and white comics as it does take a bit away from how the story was originally presented. In the case of Scott Pilgrim, the black and white at times felt perfect for the story as it give it a magnaesque vibe to it that fit well with the storyline. But...at the same time as the series and characters progressed the black and white felt limiting, as we talked about the changes in Ramona's hair color and the fight scenes that shaped the characters. So I am glad to have a chance to read the colorized version of the novel as it brings an added vibrancy and depth to Bryan's work. The colors help make the character come to life and it feels like a good animated Saturday morning cartoon, like Animaniacs, which works well with the story. In particular the color enhances the band and battle scenes, making a good black and white drawing, suddenly feel animated. My favorite scenes in color--Scott's battle sequence with matthew Patel and the demon girls. The color just brings so much to that scene, shadows and highlights that just make things pop. So despite my unease the color really does help create a more vibrant story.

This volume also includes some bonus content that reveals the life of Scott Pilgrim, before he became Scott Pilgrim. Bryan shares with us some of his influences, such as the title of a band's song, friends and family that the characters and story were based upon, and how he sold the idea to Oni to create this series of graphic novels. In addition, Bryan shares some more personal reflections such as the feelings of the rather low key release date (due to the publishing of the book being pushed back) as well his ideas and depictions of how the characters evolved as he drew them (always one of my favorite things to see.)

In short if you're a fan of Scott Pilgrim then you'll definitely want to add this book to your collection. And if you aren't a fan of Scott Pilgrim or never read it before, give this book a try in its new colorized version. You won't regret it. 5 out of 5 stars.

Incredible

These are the first graphic novels I've ever read. My general problem with graphic novels is that you can read through one in an hour or two. It hardly seems worth the price when you can get some 1000-page pulp fiction for half the cost. That said, Scott Pilgrim is definitely worth it. It's funny, the characters are engaging, the artwork is a significant part of the story, and O'Malley is able to address some really significant relational issues in a way that is lighthearted without being flippant.

The color versions seem worth the price. I don't think I'd enjoy them nearly as much in black and white.

My solution to how quickly you can read through one of these was to only read a chapter or two over coffee in the morning. It turned into my favorite part of the day (well, it probably already was; coffee is coffee). Going to sleep at night, I'd be excited to wake up and read a bit more.

So far I have enjoyed this book

I saw the movie before reading the comics. I also have not read the black and white version so I cannot compare. So far I have enjoyed this book. The story so far is very similar to the movie (well, vice versa I guess but you know what I mean) but it is still fun to visit the source material. The illustrations are top notch and the humor/personalities of the characters are just great. I look forward to reading the rest of them and seeing how the story diverges from the movie.

The capture by the German surface raider Atlantis of the British steamer City of Baghdad’s secret code books in July 1940 enabled the Nazis to de-cypher Admiralty convoy plans with deadly effect. This book describes the resulting appalling Allied losses suffered by four convoys during the Autumn of 1940. Admiral Donetz, aware of the movements of the Allied convoys, marshaled as many of his U-boats as possible. The first convoy, SC2, consisting of 53 merchant men was attacked in early September by four U-boats. Due to poor weather only five ships were lost. Shortly after HX72, with 41 ships, sailing from Nova Scotia, lost eleven ships to five Type VIIC U-boats. Top Aces Otto Kretschremer and Joachim Schepke, who penetrated inside the columns, accounted for nine. No less than nine U-boats attacked SC7 in October 1940. Of 35 merchant men a staggering 20 were lost. HX79 also fared terribly despite being a ‘fast’ convoy with ten escorts, losing twelve ships. In total forty-eight merchant men were sunk and seven more damaged without any U-boat losses at all. The Wolf Packs Gather is an authoritative account of the darkest hours of the War in the Atlantic. It describes not only the German tactics but the inadequacies of what few escorts there were and the heartbreaking loss of defenseless life.

Slaughter in the Atlantic!

During 1940 Hitler's U-boats savaged many of the convoys sailing for England with needed supplies. With the Admiralty desperately short of warships, many of those convoys sailed with few or no escorts and tragically paid the price, especially once Admiral Doenitz perfected the wolfpack attack strategy. British author Bernard Edwards chronicles the darkest hours of the Battle of the Atlantic in THE WOLF PACKS GATHER, MAYHEM IN THE WESTERN APPROACHES 1940, a 2011 Pen & Sword Books release.

THE WOLF PACKS GATHER makes for grim reading. In 1940, Germany's U-boats sank more than two million tons of Allied shipping. Aces like Prien, Schepke, Kretchsmer and Endrass slashed through the weakly-defended convoys. Edward's book details the fate of six convoys who braved the Atlantic and the U-boats. Out of 256 merchant ships assigned to those convoys, 65 vessels were lost and four more damaged. One convoy - SC7 - lost 20 of 35 merchantmen! In all, almost 1,000 brave sailors were lost in the convoy battles of 1940.

Edwards brings the Battle of the Atlantic to vivid life, effectively conveying the tension, suddenness, terror and utter finality of the U-boat attacks on ships who were often hardpressed to maintain seven knots speed. He uses various first-person reminiscences from Allied and German participants as well as official documents to alternately put the reader on the bridge of a merchantmen or in the conning tower of one of the 'grey wolves.'

In short, THE WOLF PACKS GATHER is a gripping, well-done if ultimately saddening account of the Battle of the Atlantic. Highly recommended.

Extra Credit for Parents

Okay - first..thank you to the reviewer who had the ISBN number for the 2nd book! I just added it to my cart and based on a review of the 2nd book, it looks like it will be the right one.

We bought this for my 1st grade son who loves stories and was completely intrigued by the idea that there were superheros before Batman and Superman. I started to read it out loud to him and before I knew it, the whole family was gathered around including my husband, who has read the Odyssey and Iliad many times, 3rd grade girl and kindergarten girl. Everyone LOVED it! My husband was impressed at how the story was redone for a younger age but was still true to the feel. The groan when the book ended and Odysseus was not home yet was huge! I had to promise to order the next volume today.

I would highly recomend buying the 3 book volumes instead of individual books - it makes kids realize that each book is just part of a big story. AND be ready to buy the next volume! The other reviewer gives you the number to look up.

We also bought him the coloring book from Dover of Greek Gods and Goddesses from Amazon. It really helped with picturing some of the gods - although we realized at the end of Mary Pope Osborne's book that the author has sketches of them and pronounciation lists! Oh well.... he still loves the coloring book.

There are some gross parts (people being eaten by the Cyclopes and Giants and the Six Headed monster) BUT it is well handled and not overly graphic at all. We are crazy overprotective parents about what our kids watch and my kndergarten girl didn't even bat an eye. So don't let that stop you from buying the book. I think everything was entirely age appropriate for younger elementary who have not had a birds and the bees talk as well!

Overall - it is a great way to introduce your kids to the Odyssey and I will absolutely be looking for anything written by the author (actually already added a couple to my cart!)

Can not believe there are not more reviews!

I own both book 1 and book 2 which is a brilliant collection of all her individual tales from the Odyssey. I just finished reading the first book aloud to my 8 year old, and we are thrilled. Osbornes language choices are magical. It has also stretched my son's vocabulary because the magical storytelling and the context make it easy to understand. Of course this isn't as detailed as the original, but few children are ready for the original until high school, and by then they often don't care. I think that by introducing the wonderful stories in Mary Pope Osbornes format, that it will build pegs for them to latch on to when they tackle "The Illiad" later. I should also add that I am a homeschooling parent, and we read laundry baskets full of books each year (maybe each month) and these two are at the top of our list for the year.

True to Homer and kid-friendly.

I think this book could win pretty much anyone over to Homer and these timeless stories that are so much a part of our collective conscios. You'll see Homer's classic descriptions in here, like "rosy-fingered dawn" and "the wine-dark sea," and all the drama and even gore (when Odysseus's men are eaten by the Cyclops and Scylla, for examples), but somehow more fun to read with your kids than a straight translation would be. Make sure to get Part 2, too. My 7-yr-old son was dying to know if Odysseus would ever make it home!
Hint for read-alouds: you can Google how to pronounce names like Scylla, Charybdis, Telemachus, etc., to get the accent/intonation right.

Overpriced and underinformed

With the current penchant for "evidence-based" treatment, this book provides a trifling of information of the variety of historical uses of hydrotherapy. Why research something as cheap as water? Research will only happen when the pharmaceutical industry convinces everyone that hydrotherapy can only be conducted with $10 per-liter 'mineral enriched' bottled water from ice-age aquifer or industrially reconstituted similarities. The book offers little addition to what current PT practice may use. At one-quarter the price, I would give it another star making it "OK". Save your money and grab an old PT text, or put it towards copies of the Kellogg material.

I was asked at my place of work to do hydrotherapy as a health procedure. I had no idea what this was so with help of this book and the proticol it offered I am now performing this on my clients. It is well written, easy to follow and definitely worth the money.

Amazing results simple and powerful.

The information in this bookl is full of history and scientific effects on the human body from the use of hot and cold water. As a natural therapist and massage therapist I was so amazed at the exciting healing changes of hydrotherapy on the human body. So simple so cheap and so powerful. I was so excited to see the scientific benefits of the water treatments and have found I am less exhausted by using the methods and feeling a lot better from trying the hot and cold showers. Definately using them in my practice and getting good results.

Ma le liste d’attesa in Italia sono penosamente lunghe. Poi una telefonata improvvisa apre uno spiraglio: la possibilità di ottenere un trapianto immediato, a Sarajevo.
Inizia così un vortice avvincente di eventi nel corso dei quali il giovane protagonista conosce da vicino la tragica realtà della vendita di organi in una terra martoriata dalla guerra e stremata dalla miseria.

I needed to read this

Amidst all the latest fads and "movements" within contemporary Christianity in the West, Frost and Hirsch's "ReJesus" is a clarion call to recalibrate our lives to the one that gathered us together and sent us out in the first place - Jesus.

In their own words, "this book is dedicated to the recovery of the absolute centrality of the person of Jesus in defining who we are as well as what we do."

What I appreciate so much about these two authors is that it is clear that the motivation behind their penetrating and sometimes uncomfortable critique of pop-Christianity is stemmed in their deep love for the Church. While this book has a rich bibliography from such theologians as N.T. Wright, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jaqcues Ellul, and Jurgan Moltmann...both Frost and Hirsch have chosen to step out of the ivory tower of academia and into the streets of everyday existence as they paint a vivid picture of what it means for someone's entire life to be re-focused, re-calibrated, and re-centered on Jesus.

While Frost and Hirsch are both excellent writers and engaging to read, I found this book reading me even after I set it down...it really got deep inside of me.

If you are interested in going beyond a mere admiration of Jesus to a pervasive imitation of Jesus in every area of your life - this book is for you.

As a pastor, but more importantly as a follower of Jesus Christ, this book couldn't have come to me at a more pivotal time. When I first became a follower of Jesus 8 years ago, a friend and mentor reminded me to never forget my first love - Jesus.. Over the years, however, my first love has been smothered by the trappings of comfort, success, and maintaining the status quo. I have devoured books on how to be a better pastor, a better leader, and a better Christian through the latest trends and fads...

This book, however, is unlike those. As the authors of "ReJesus" say, "it is time to recalibrate the church around the person of Jesus rather than around marketing ploys developed for a shallow consumeristic age."

Thanks to both Frost and Hirsch for helping me remember my first love and providing a re-invitation to follow Jesus in every area of my life.

A Clarion Call to Recenter on Jesus

I rejoice that God is raising up a true spiritual reset within His church that Jesus may be genuinely known, experienced, imitated, and magnified. ReJesus will revolutionize the church if Jesus is cherished above all the diverse theologies and traditions.

A great read for those trying to live in the ways of Jesus

This morning I finished reading ReJesus: A Wild Messiah for a Missional Church by Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch. To start with, I want to thank Hendrickson Publishers for sending me a copy of this book. It was very kind of you and I pray the best for you and your business.

I figure the best way to do book reviews is to write excerpts from the book that stood out to me. I am not sure what you the reader likes to read, so I will just put parts of this book that I like to read and that caused me to think. The following are excerpts from ReJesus that I hope inspire you to move and to order this book.

"How can we call ourselves Christian unless what we are doing is built squarely on the rock of Jesus and takes it's direct agenda (and direct cues for its organizations and lifestyle) from him." Pg. 65

"Observers should be able to encounter Jesus in and though the life and community of his followers. People observing us aught to be able to discern the elements of Jesus' ways in out ways. If they cannot find authentic signals of the historical Jesus through the life of his people, then as far as we are concerned they have the full right to question out legitimacy." Pg. 79

"Jesus reveals God to us. God does not reveal Jesus to us. We cannot deduce anything about jesus from what we think w know about God; we must deduce everything about Godfrom what we know about Jesus." Pg. 132

"We need to pickle ourselves in the gospels. They must become out primary stories and reference point. There is no truer way to encounter Jesus afresh than prayerfully cycling through the Gospels and asking God to give us fresh insight into the remarkable person we find there. We must give our hearts, minds, souls, to the one around whom history turns." Pg. 162

"To be sure, we do not like gatherings (speaking of church services), of strangers who never meet or know each other outside of Sundays, who sit passively while virtual strangers preach and lead singing, who put up with second rate pseudo-community under the guise of connection with each other, who live different lives from Monday to Saturday than they do on Sunday, whose sole expression of worship is pop-style praise and worship, who rarely laugh together, fight injustice together, eat together, pray together, raise each others Children together, serve the poor together, or share Jesus with those who have not been set free." Pg. 172-173

As you can see, this book is about ReJesusing the church of Christ. It is a challenging look at how we are living out our faith in Jesus in our daily lives. I really liked this book. It is a bit technical, but it will carry you and open your eyes to the Church that Jesus prayed for and died for. I hope you enjoy.
