Black Tuesday Over Namsi: B-29s vs MiGs - the Forgotten Air Battle of the Korean War, 23 October 1951, by Earl. J. McGill

An hour and a half before sunup, nine B-29s of the 307th Bombardment Wing lifted off from Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa on a bombing mission against Namsi, a North Korean airfield under construction in the heart of MiG Alley. Five and a half hours later they would engage in an air battle that would forever change the conduct of strategic aerial bombardment. Six of the nine would not return, the highest percentage of United States bombers ever lost on a major mission.Astonishingly, virtually nothing has been published about this event. Official Air Force historical records mention it only in passing and literature of the period too often emphasizes the gung-ho aspect than the grim reality of war. Black Tuesday Over Namsi chronicles the calamitous B-29 daylight-bombing mission flown by the 307th Bombardment Wing on 23 October 1951 against Namsi Airfield. What many experts consider the epic air battle of the Korean War and perhaps the greatest jet engagement in the history of aerial warfare has largely become another forgotten battle in a forgotten war. Here, Lt. Col McGill presents the facts and circumstances of the mission from first briefing to final landing. This book also records, from verifiable historical documents, the broader events and conditions that led up to the confrontation, plus the firsthand accounts of aircrew members and ground personnel who were there. Allied and Soviet perspectives are examined; statements made by the MiG pilots describe the attack; and eyewitnesses to the event have supplied photographs of the mission and its aftermath, including the aerial photo of the Namsi Airfield that was used to plan the mission. This thoroughly researched narrative history is enhanced by numerous photographs, a bibliography, and an index to full names, places and subjects. This is the story of the Americans and Russians who clashed in the skies above Namsi, the events leading up to it, Black Tuesday's historical impact on aerial warfare, and, for the first time, fresh conclusions based on a careful analysis of the specific factors that went into the execution of this and other bombing missions.

Must read for anyone interested in Korean War Aviation
By Robert L. Adair
I first bought the paperback version that Mr. McGill published several years ago. Below is the review I posted for that edition. Since I gave that copy to my father I jumped when I heard that it was republished in hardback with updated pictures. I have re-read the book and thoroughly enjoyed the additional photos and updates. If you have any interest in B-29s you will not be disappointed. Bob A., 2012.

Review of Paperback edition: I bought this book directly from the publisher since Amazon was sold out and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have several interests in the subject, I am a military history buff with a BA in History, I am a US Navy Pilot with 15 years experience flying P-3 and C-130 aircraft, and finally my grandfather was aircrew with 50 missions in a 307th BG aircraft over Korea.

This air battle lasted only minutes but Mr McGill does an outstanding job of clearly presenting the battle and its importance in later operations. The strength of the book in my opinion is his knowledge and descriptions of the B-29 operations in general in regards to command and control structure, (or lack of between Bombing Groups), mission selection, tactics, and targeting execution. His research of the Soviet opponents makes for a balanced presentation and helps explain the official but conflicting accounts from both sides. His themes that deviation from accepted and proven tactics, misuse of technology (SHORAN), poor strategic vision in target selection, and complacency ring familiar in my experience in today's military and are worthy of study by this generation of military officers.

I finished the book with an impression (and one Mcgill mentions) that after the Air Force Bomber Command destroyed the strategic targets in North Korea they couldn't think of anything more inspiring to use these assets for than as bait to draw out the MIGS.

I think this book will appeal to both students of history and the casual reader. Mr. McGill does a great job of explaining the background and the context of the battle as well as why it was important. It reads fast and is very hard to put down once started. Historians will appreciate his documentation and original research. Military students will benefit from the insights of a participant of the Korean Air War that still have value today. I hope that you enjoy the book as much as I did.

Black Tuesday Over Namsi
By Anthony J. Queeno
Much has been written about the Korean Air War, but never has anyone put it all together... until now.

Earl McGill, to his credit compiled the information from published and unpublished accounts and combined them with diligent interviews with the people that were there.
The author did not rely on just one individual account but interviewed both sides, the actual Russian pilots who flew the Migs and the American aircrews who flew the B-29s in the conflict.

I was the right gunner on "Command Decision" in the same outfit (19th BG, 28th BS) as McGill, although not during the same time frame. His accounts were factual, accurate and definitive of the missions we flew. The writing is spellbinding, as are the details.

The book exposes the disdain of the planning and philosophy of the air war. "Black Tuesday Over Namsi" corrects some errors and and provides detailed and compelling historical accounts of the air war.

A Must Read Aviation History
By Alan
I originally purchased the paperback version of "Black Tuesday Over Namsi". It covers an important piece of military history that essentially marked the end of prop driven bombers. Some internet sites list this as one of the top 10 air battles of all time.

My father, William E."Bill" Reeter, was the pilot of one of the B-29s on the Namsi mission. That certainly makes me biased to some extent. But my interest includes a strong need for accuracy, not myth building. This book is credible.

Dad rarely talked about the mission. As a child I was only aware of the mission because of photos of his damaged B-29 in our family album and his Silver Star (i.e., the third highest combat decoration). The citation for his Silver Star says, "... Reeter's aircraft was severely damaged and he and seven crew members were injured. Three separate fires developed in the aircraft.." Actually, I think 9 of the 10 crew received the Purple Heart ... one died.

Finally, just two years before my Dad's passing I finally got him to talk at length about the mission.
Although he spoke very factually (he had a reputation for never exaggerating), the mission he described made the "Memphis Bell" movie seem like a cake walk in comparison. This is all confirmed by military photos and AF documentation. Still, the crew on my Dads aircraft were luckier than most of the other crews. This book tells the whole story.

Author and historian, Earl McGill, has rare understanding of the mission as he was a B-29 pilot flying in the same theater. As a professional historian he understands the value of primary sources and deep research. He brings together American and Russian accounts of the battle. Using multiple sources he corrects some errors in military accounts. For me, the eyewitness accounts are especially interesting.

This is an absolutely must read book for anyone interested in military history or military aviation in general.
