The first land-grant college in Texas--called the Agricultural and Mechanical College--was predominantly a military school, built in 1876 in a then-remote area of Central Texas. Author Glenn D. Davis was born in Bryan but grew up in Wellborn and Somerville. After spending a career abroad as a foreign correspondent, he returned to his hometown in 2007 to teach International Studies at Texas A&M, as well as an introductory course in journalism at Blinn College. College Station gigs 'em!

This book helped me find new appreciation for College Station. Having lived in College Station for a brief two years, I failed to take advantage to learn of the city's rich history during my time there. Indeed, prior to reading this book I'd simply decided that College Station was nothing more than a collection of 100,000 scared-of-the-world Texans whose entire identity consisted in a seemingly endless collection of strange "Aggie traditions". I couldn't have been more wrong. The history of College Station is fascinating: it began as a remote area, then the place of a land-grant college for the military, then a stronghold for the railroads south of the Mason-Dixon Line (hence why the city became College STATION), and now home of one of the largest universities in the U.S. It's an extraordinary, uniquely American, development.

I myself found the chapters discussing the old College Station to be the most interesting. The book itself, esp. the second half, is a little heavy on discussions of Aggie traditions for my liking. Similarly, the book has a LOT of photography -- perhaps too much. I suppose this is to be expected in the "Images of America" series; but 'tis a small shame in this case, as Glenn Davis's storytelling is often quite good. At any rate, all Aggies -- past, present, and prospective -- should have a copy of this book in their home library.

Very good backgound information for those interested in the area.

An interesting and insightful pictorial history of a small Texas town closely associated with a now major University. Of course my interest was heightened by the fact that I received not only a Bachelors degree from A&M (1965) after spending four years in the Corps of Cadets, but then 11 years later after living in College Station for 2 years, a Masters degree as well. I recently went back for a mini reunion with some of the members of my class that were in my outfit. College Station is currently a boom town with construction every where as well as on the campus. This book covers some of the structures shops that are no longer there as well as those that are about to disappear. When I was there, there was no structure over two stories except on campus. Now high rises are sprouting up. It is about to go through a major change again.

More than just a town...

This book appears to be about the town of College Station only. It is much more. It is a book about the town, the state of Texas, and the university that formed the town to begin with. It is fascinating. I couldn't put it down once I started it. There were facts in this book that I had seen nowhere else. It is well-written and interesting. Wish there were a hardbound version. Will watch for one.

This was an easy read and learned a lot from this book. Just "discovered" Indian Rocks Beach and will be back. #IRB. Was wondering if Beach Trail was a part of the original Gulf Blvd. It shows as a ghost trail on Google the entire length of the beach.

The Jewish community of Greater Harrisburg became established after 1825, mostly by German immigrants who took up peddling and clothing trades. They were attracted inland from East Coast cities to Harrisburg, the growing upriver hub of trade that became Pennsylvania's state capital in 1812. The community grew to 600 residents by the end of the 19th century and drew attention for a level of civic engagement well beyond that of comparably sized settlements. Immigration from eastern Europe in the early 20th century contributed to a tenfold increase of the Jewish population and a changing ethnic and commercial profile. In the years that followed, the community added an impressive range of institutions and continued to have a reputation for activism. Emerging as the hub of Jewish life in central Pennsylvania, the community produced internationally renowned figures in Jewish affairs, business, and arts.

Simon J. Bronner, Penn State Harrisburg professor and author of the book Images of America, Greater Harrisburg's Jewish Community says "people began coming here including peddlers and immigrants because they were attracted not only to the idea of the state capital but it was a growing river hub especially with the development of the Pennsylvania canal in the mid-19th century."

And it's the beginning of that migration that forms the beginning of Bronner's book, which documents the settlement of mainly German immigrants in 1825 to the forming of the Eigth Ward and the expansion north.

Jumping off each page is a collection of photographs taken by Arnold Zuckerman that was given to the Historical Society of Dauphin County.

They help to chronical the growth of the Jewish community from 600 residents by the end of the 19th century to a tenfold increase by the early 20th century.

Emerging from the community were residents who succeeded in business, community service and politics.

People like Miriam Menaker.

People pass by the Heinz-Menaker Senior center on 4th street everyday without realizing the building is named after Miriam Menaker, the first woman and Jew to serve on city council back in 1969.

Bronner says, "many of these local figures who were so community minded may not have a Wikipedia page, they may not show up in encyclopedias, but they have great local significance and show the benefits I think of civic engagement."

Bronner's book also shines a light on a dark cloud that hung over the community.

Anti-semitic acts that were displayed on synagogues and other buildings in the city.

But Bronner wants to leave readers with a message of hope.

Bronner says, "there are efforts to combat that as well as cooperation among different ethnic groups, Jews, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans that are documented here to improve tolerance and community harmony through the years."

The images in Greater Harrisburg's Jewish Community come mainly from the Historical Society of Dauphin County and the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg. The Javitch Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation of Central Pennsylvania provided funding for the project.

Awesome book, but it really is for total starters

I, being a person who has taken photos for about 5 years, thought that this book would be a good way to fill in any gaps I may have missed on my self-teaching career. Totally wrong. The book is written as if someone has never used a camera before. Upon browsing through the advanced photography edition, the only things I learned after spending $25 on this would have also been covered in the advanced book.

Don't think this is a negative review. No way. This book is freakin' amazing. It's the best beginning photography book I have ever read in my life. I wish I'd had this when I was first beginning. The book, in very simple terms, delves into great detail and explains all the workings of both film and digital cameras, but never once did I get the impression it would be hard to read this for a total beginner. If you want to really be a photographer, but don't even have a camera yet, start with this book once you get one.

For those of you who've got the hang of you're camera and want to get better or see what you've missed, just get the advanced one. It'll fill in the gaps for a better bargain than this book. All this will do is fill in the gaps, but you won't learn more. The advanced book fills in and goes into even greater detail, so much that the people who need this book would probably have a nervous breakdown if they read it.

Okay, that's a bit strong, hahahah, but yeah, the books don't appear to build on each other. It seems like the books are written for people who want to be like a certain photographer. If you just want to take nice pics of family, friends, etc., this book is great. If you eventually want to be a NatGeo photographer, start with the advanced book.

If you've never extensively used a camera (i.e. you've never done anything other than push the button), this is the book for you. If you've used it a lot for over 6 months, get a higher-level book.

Awesome book for beginners

This book is really good for anyone trying to learn photography as it covers various topics from the very beginning to a more advance level. It covers the fundamentals of photography in an excellent way and gradually builds up to more advance topics like creative composition and using the advance features of the camera. It has some good projects at the end of the sections and a great way to dive deeper into the concepts with hands-on experience.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who want to thoroughly learn the elements and build on them.

Michael Longford's STARTING PHOTOGRAPHY is for anyone who has every clicked a shutter button. The main emphasis is the transition from film to digital, the differences and similarities. Since Kodak declared bankrupey last week a new edition might be forth coming dedicated to the digital world.
Cell phones outstripped digital cameras for holiday gift giving so even the digital camera maybe a wave of the past.
For excellent instruction on lightening, composition, camera operation, style, etc. this is an excellent beginning.

good teaching tool, but�

Mr. Cartwright's book is a excellent teaching text for high school or college students studying video and multimedia production. It does a great job of taking the beginner through all of the steps needed to ensure a successful production.
However, one can't help overlook that a text written four years ago on this subject is LONG overdue for a new edition.
Many software applications that are referred to as "soon to be released" are now in their 3rd or 4th version. Likewise, the hardware section of the book is terribly behind the times, as their is virtually no mention of digital video cameras, digital capture cards, current generation non-linear editing systems, or DVD.
Also disappointing was the 3.5" disc that's included, which contains all of the forms in the book. The disc is specially formatted so that it cannot be read on a Macintosh-which CAN read any commonly formatted PC diskette! Instead the publisher encourages Mac users to send in the PC disk and receive a Mac disk at no charge. Why not just use the standard 1.4mb formatting for a PC disk and let users of either platform access the material? Or better yet, just put the forms on a hybrid CD-ROM. This is especially irksome to Mac devotees, when practically all of the computers pictured in the book doing video editing are Macs!
Yet, despite its need for a new edition to address the latest and greatest in hardware and software, and its platform specific floppy, Pre-Production and Planning for Video, Film and Multimedia will serve as a valuable resource for those new to the pre and post production arena, as much of the planning and organizational approaches in the text never go out of style!

I choose this rating because the book is good. What I like about the book is that it prepare you for the myriad of steps required to execute production and post production of a video, film or multimedia project. What I dislike about the book is that it had a lot of pages to read.

This book is outdated for a student of the digital age, but it still holds some relevent information that comes in handy for some classes.

The copy I got was in great condition. (And yes, it came with a 3.5" Disk that still appeared to be in great shape. Haha! :) )

Award-winning author Dana Cameron lives in eastern Massachusetts with her husband and two cats. Good. Entertaining, and reasonably well written.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Hadn't heard of this author before getting a chance to read this book, and the werewolf genre tends to be more my wife's thing than mine. But I finished the book in two days (and it's not exactly a quick read, it's a decent-length book). It was a good story. The book was entertaining. I suppose it could have been a bit more polished: Cameron is a new author, and while not bad, the book doesn't flow as easily as some similar fantasy/sci-fi works I've read. I'm guessing that'll improve with additional books. I certainly couldn't do any better.

As a scientist (a biologist, in my case), I liked the small but important bits of academe that got incorporated into the text (the Sus scrofa reference made me smile). As expected, it was a little heavy on mythology, which I found interesting. A little dose of reality helps ground fiction to the real world.

The book started a little slow, but it definitely had its exciting moments.

Anyway... it was worth my time, will probably be worth yours, and I expect we'll be seeing more of Zoe Miller and the Fangborn in the future. I'm looking forward to it.

Werewolf Zoe and the Search for the Lost Thingamajig

WHAT IS IT?

"Seven Kinds of Hell" is the first novel in Dana Cameron's planned "Fangborn" fantasy series. The Fangborn are supernatural creatures that come in three varieties: werewolves, vampires, and oracles. Magically compelled to fight Evil, the Fangborn have guarded humanity throughout the ages. Twenty-something werewolf Zoe Miller knows little about her heritage because her mother has, for her own reasons, always kept Zoe hidden from the Fangborn. With Zoe's mother dying, however, the Fangborn -- and others who know about the Fangborn -- begin closing in on Zoe. Some want to help her, but most want to use her. The immediate threat is Dmitri, a Russian gangster who kidnaps Zoe's cousin and demands that she acquire an artifact from an insane collector in exchange for her cousin's life. The quest to free her cousin leads Zoe to London and then to Venice, the Greek Islands, and beyond. She is hunted at every step, not knowing whether she can trust anyone, even her ex-boyfriend Will. Moreover, what begins as a mission to get hold of an insignificant figurine soon turns into a search for one of the most feared objects in Greek mythology: Pandora's Box.

WHY MIGHT YOU WANT TO READ IT?

My original working title for this review was "Junk Food for the Werewolf-Lover's Soul." Sometimes we crave junk food, and junk food is often better than nothing. I'm not going to praise the book, but I will say that the story moves quickly, there's plenty of action, and the idea of the Fangborn is one of the most oddball takes on werewolves and vampires that you're likely to come across. Fangborn vampires, for example, are *good* by nature, they *thrive* on sunshine, and when they manifest their vampire selves, they shapeshift into *snake* form. Furthermore, they're not undead, they're not immortal, they *heal* people rather than feeding on them, and their main thing is controlling people via their venom and some sort of psychic force. (In other words, her vampires have almost nothing in common with "our" vampires.) If archaeology appeals to you, Zoe has an undergrad degree in the discipline and her knowledge becomes quite important when the good (and bad) guys begin rummaging around in ancient Greek ruins. If Romance appeals to you, that's here too: Zoe broke up with brilliant and hunky Will years ago because she didn't have control over her werewolf self and was afraid that she might hurt him. Her knees go weak when she runs into him today, but does he still want her? Hint: this is a "kissing book."

WHY MIGHT YOU WANT TO SKIP IT?

The number one reason to skip this book is that it's a mess; a frustrating, confusing, difficult-to-follow mess. You expect more questions than answers in the first half of a novel like this one, but you also expect things to resolve over time. To be fair, some questions do get answered, but this book is packed with too many characters, too many agendas, too many locations, and too many objects for the mere human mind to track. For example, I'm still confused about who works for the Senator (one of the bosses out to control Zoe); who works for the TRG (an agency within the FBI, I think, that keeps tabs on the Fangborn -- think "HRG" :); what organization Gerry and Claudia represent, if any; who Adam and the guy with the shiny head work for; and whether any of them have anything to do with Zoe's father's family. If you can't tell what's going on -- and, worse, if you cease to care what's going on -- that takes a big bite out of your reading pleasure.

The book has a wide range of additional weaknesses, but if the first one doesn't bother you, the rest probably won't either. Still, here's a sampling: First, everybody makes inexplicable choices. For example, Dmitri wants figurines, but he doesn't ask Zoe to give him the one she has before she jets off to London. Second, much of the plot depends on the same sort of "hidden clue points to secret location of mysterious object" nonsense that you see in "The Da Vinci Code" and ABC's recent "Zero Hour." Third, there's just too much boilerplate cliche about fighting the Beast within, etc.

AND SO?

"Seven Kinds of Hell" is B-movie material at best. I don't regret having read it, but I don't expect to be buying any future books in the series either. Count this as a weakly negative recommendation.

Messy!

Oh my, this was a messy muddle of a book! I really wanted to love it. I enjoy urban fantasy and I absolutely love archaeological adventures - even with a paranormal angle. But this was a mess.

In reality, it seemed like a couple of books mashed together.

First - the archaeological book. It sort of reminded me of those old Elizabeth Peters books - not Amelia Peabody - more like Vicky Bliss. There's a search for the literal Pandora's Box. There's a round the world chase following clues and finding archaeological treasures with people trying to stop our heroine - or kill her.

Then - the Urban Fantasy. Um...just having werewolves and vampires (non-traditional) does not an urban fantasy make. Instead of a butt-kicking heroine, we get Zoe who runs away from problems and has the personality of a doorpost. As for the sexy hero - he's not that sexy. In fact, I liked the easily influenced milquetoast best friend better than Zoe's love interest with their passionless passion. And instead of an urban fantasy world that seems like it actually went through a world building process, we get the usual - some paranormals want to come out to the humans. Others don't. One evil human wants to be a paranormal. If you've read any urban fantasy, you've read it before and better.

The relationships were messy. I didn't know who was working for whom or why. And some of the best characters were the minor ones like Danny.

I confess, it was a struggle for me to finish this book. It was the archaeology that got me through.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll continue with this series.

A mediocre treatment

The bottom line with respect to this book is that there is simply little that is particularly new or remarkable here. On the contrary, this author's treatment of the subject matter is far more muddled and meandering that other contemporary treatments of "ancient" wisdom applied to contemporary leadership/workplace issues.
There is a great deal that needs improvement in this book. The subject matter has been hashed over a lot recently, but good treatments would still be of interest. There's a lot of loose talk about "scientific evidence this ... " and "science is now showing that ... " etc. with no attempts to provide references or corroborating information. The author's writing style is such that he tends to careen from one thing to another in a way that I found simply annoying.
In short, in my opinion this is not one of the better books in this area by any means.

Painful

I have degrees in science, business, and law from reputable universities in the U.S.A.. It was while I was earning my M.B.A. that I was required to read this book. I'm open to new ideas and tolerant of many religious points of view. However, the book is best summarized as mysticism and a butchery of modern philosophical, scientific, and business thought.

The flaw logic in this book repeatedly goes something like this: (1) Eastern religion and mystics have ancient wisdom; (2) Western scientific/business thought is discovering it is incorrect and Eastern thought is correct (with little to no support for these claims); (3) Thus, Eastern thought was right (and Western thought was wrong) all along.

If you believe that Eastern religion or mysticism is a panacea that holds the answers to everything in life--including business and science--and you just want to reinforce your preexisting beliefs, then you will love this book. If you require pesky things like evidence and facts before you blindly believe something or if you have a background in logic, business, or science, then this book will be painful to read.

In summary, if you like reading Deepak Chopra style quasi-eastern religious self-help books then this book is for you! Personally, I think don't think it will help you in your job or your life.

Truly Exceptional

This is one of the most remarkable books on leadership and management I've found. The author takes principles from ancient religions and more recent heroes like Gandhi and Mother Theresa and presents them in the context of developing leadership characteristics through conscious awareness. Chatterjee correctly realizes that true leadership springs naturally from the leader's self-mastery, and eloquently lays out the paths that must be followed. This is a book to be read and re-read in small bites and then contemplated in silence. An achievement of the first order, and deserving of much attention.
