The War of the Gun Boats, by Bryan Cooper

The 'little ships' of the Second World War - the fast and highly maneuverable motor torpedo boats and gunboats which fought in coastal waters all over the world - developed a special kind of naval warfare. With their daring nightly raids against an enemy's coastal shipping - and sometimes much larger warships - they acquired the buccaneering spirit of an earlier age. And never more so than in the close hand-to-hand battles which raged between opposing craft when they met in open waters.Large numbers of these small fighting boats were built by the major naval powers. The Germans called them Schnellboote (Fast Boats), referred to by the British as E-boats (E for Enemy). In the Royal Navy they were MTBs and MGBs. The American equivalent were PT boats (for Patrol Torpedo). They fought in the narrow waters of the English Channel and the stormy North Sea, in the Mediterranean off the coasts of North Africa and Italy and among the islands of the Aegean, across the Pacific from Pearl Harbour to Leyte Gulf, in Hong Kong and Singapore, and off Burma's Arakan coast.Bryan Cooper's book traces the history and development of these craft from their first limited use in the First World War and the fast motor boats designed in the 1930s for wealthy private clients and water speed record attempts. With account of the battles which took place during the Second World War, when the vital importance of coastal waters came to be recognized, he captures the drama of this highly individual form of combat. And not least the sea itself which was the common enemy of all who crewed these frail craft.

comprehensive and compelling
By dcastro
Many books on this topic are very brief, very technical or focussed on one aspect, such as pt109. This book covers the range of information from the history of the development of torpedo and gunboats to the technical improvements over time and between the various nations operating them. It also lays out the operations conducted by these benefits as chronologically and by theatre of war. Perhaps the most compelling part is the account of individual acts of bravery and the highlighting of the number of decorations these men won in the course if their duties. Citing examples of each operation is a nice way of showing how the boats worked without becoming repetitive and boring.
A Truly a heartfelt and appropriate tribute to their sacrifices and a terrific reference on the history of this underemphasized group of warriors.

Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood, by Maria Tatar

Highly illuminating for parents, vital for students and book lovers alike, Enchanted Hunters transforms our understanding of why children should read.

Ever wondered why little children love listening to stories, why older ones get lost in certain books? In this enthralling work, Maria Tatar challenges many of our assumptions about childhood reading. Much as our culture pays lip service to the importance of literature, we rarely examine the creative and cognitive benefits of reading from infancy through adolescence. By exploring how beauty and horror operated in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, and many other narratives, Tatar provides a delightful work for parents, teachers, and general readers, not just examining how and what children read but also showing through vivid examples how literature transports and transforms children with its intoxicating, captivating, and occasionally terrifying energy. In the tradition of Bruno Bettelheim’s landmark The Uses of Enchantment, Tatar’s book is not only a compelling journey into the world of childhood but a trip back for adult readers as well.

Maria Tatar chairs the Program in Folklore and Mythology at Harvard University. She is the author of Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood, Off with Their Heads! Fairy Tales and the Culture of Childhood and many other books on folklore and fairy stories. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

From The Washington Post
From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by Michael Dirda Maria Tatar is the John L. Loeb Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. Many of us would expect the holder of such an august title to be an authority on, say, "The Nibelungenlied" or Goethe or the novels of Thomas Mann. In fact, Tatar may be our leading scholar of children's literature and of the fairy tale in particular. Two of her more recent books include "The Annotated Brothers Grimm" and "The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen." I want to stress that word "scholar." Early in her introduction to "Enchanted Hunters," Tatar writes that in her courses on children's literature, the students naively "insisted on magic, on the incandescent beauty of the stories, and on the Wordsworthian 'attendant gleams / Of soul-illumination' that accompanied their readings. By contrast, I was eager to break the spell, to demystify and disenchant, moving from reading for pleasure to reading for hidden meanings, symbolic codes, and narrative technique." So be warned: "Enchanted Hunters" is full of insights into "the power of stories in childhood," but its tone is often that of the seminar. Tatar conveniently summarizes her book's aims at the end of her introduction: "I will begin this volume, after a chapter on the origins of childhood stories, by examining the power surges that come with reading and by exploring how books can ignite the imagination. Literature for children enthralls and entrances in large part through the shock effects of beauty and horror. Those moments, in all their unstudied power, are what lure children into a world made up of letters, and they constitute the subject matter of chapters 2 and 3. The final two chapters look at the cognitive gains provided by literacy, showing that children learn, through stories, how to do things with words even as words do things to them. In these chapters, I take up the notion of reading as a process of discovery and explore how that process engages three dominant features in the emotional landscape of the child: boredom, wonder, and curiosity." Tatar then proceeds to a discussion of what it means to read at bedtime, starting with those long centuries of communal tale-telling around the hearth: "The light of the blazing fire combined with the dark, gloomy shadows by the hearth to transmit sharp contrasts, shaping the expectations of listeners and inspiring the tellers. It is no accident that fairy-tale worlds enact struggles between the powers of light and darkness and choreograph collisions between beauty and horror. The atmosphere in which they flourished rippled and flowed with those contrasts." Beauty and horror are central to fairy tales. Such narratives, Tatar writes, usually suggest wondrous beauty by highlighting "the production of radiance (light, glass, gold, and brilliant hues), an insistence on abstract adjectives ('exquisite,' 'lovely,' and 'enchanting'), and descriptions of rapturous contemplation." Everything beautiful "glitters, dazzles, and shines," chiefly because of "metals, ice, glass, mirrors, silver and gold." But if beauty is "abstractly luminous," horror is "depicted not only with detailed specificity but also with astonishing variety." Tatar lists a few of those fairy-tale horrors, sometimes toned down or eliminated in modern retellings: "In the Grimms' 'Snow White,' iron shoes are heated over a fire, and the evil stepmother is forced to dance to her death in 'red-hot iron shoes.' In Andersen's 'Little Match Girl,' we not only see the child 'huddled between two houses, with rosy cheeks and a smile on her lips,' but we also learn that she had 'frozen to death' and that the New Year is dawning on the 'frozen body of the little girl, who was still holding matches in her hand.' In Andrew Lang's Yellow Fairy Book, the Sun-Hero fends off ferocious wolves night after night. Finally, his strength fails him. He falls asleep, and a crab crawls toward him and 'with its claws tore out his tongue.' The princess who lives at the top of the glass mountain in that same collection sits at the window of her castle, gazing out at 'the heap of corpses both of riders and horses' and at the 'many dying men' who lie in her courtyard, 'unable to go any further with their wounded limbs.' " Horror naturally leads Tatar into the subject of death. In Chapter 3 she discusses children's prayers, the Victorian ideal of a "beautiful death," and the boom 30 years ago in high trauma young-adult novels: "According to one count, more than two hundred books of fiction for children took up the theme of death in the 1970s and 1980s." Tatar shows that dealing with fear of the dark -- and, by extension, with the fear of extinction -- forms a major subtext of such picture book classics as Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd's "Goodnight Moon" and Maurice Sendak's "In the Night Kitchen." Even more directly, death proves a major theme of E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web," beginning with its famous opening line: "Where's Papa going with that ax?" In her fourth chapter, "The Magic Art of the Great Humbug," Tatar addresses the power of curses, spells and charms to change reality (in fairy tales, at least), but also how books like L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz," Frances Hodgson Burnett's "The Secret Garden" and Norton Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth" "champion the importance of learning how to do things with words, hinting that control over language conquers helplessness and vulnerability, leading to confidence and authority." In her final chapter, Tatar turns to the connected themes of boredom, curiosity and wonder. How many books, she notes, begin with kids complaining that they are bored with nothing to do? So many of our great children's classics -- she points to Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" and Dr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat" -- underscore that an engaged curiosity offers the cure for boredom. In its turn, curiosity will then lead to the discovery that the world is full of wonder, as Marco discovered in Dr. Seuss's "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street." Tatar's evocative title, "Enchanted Hunters," derives from Nabokov's "Lolita," where the phrase forms one of the book's leitmotifs -- it is, for instance, the name of the hotel to which Humbert takes Lolita. But Tatar staunchly hopes to "reclaim" the term as a description of the child as reader, "curious, energetic, and enthralled." To show more precisely what she means, she concludes her book with a long appendix in which dozens of writers -- from Frederick Douglass and Walt Whitman to Rita Dove and Harold Bloom -- testify to the power of childhood reading. So, in the end, "Enchanted Hunters" paradoxically takes us right back to accounts of -- what else? -- magic, incandescent beauty and Wordsworthian gleams of "soul-illumination."

Provides useful insights into stories and how it impacts children's lives
By Z Hayes
Maria Tatar's "Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood" is an engaging read, and does not resort to heavy-handed use of language nor a boorish academic tone to make it's point. This made it highly appealing to me and I found a lot of useful insights into the powerful impact of stories upon children.

Chapter One: Reading Them to Sleep [Storytelling and the Invention of Bedtime Reading] explores the various facets of storytelling and bedtime reading. Chapter Two: Beauty, Horror, and Ignition Power [Can Books Change Us?} looks at narrative techniques, especially on reader's fascination with the macabre and horrific. Chapter Three: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep [Brushes with Death] explores the theme of death in children's books. Chapter Four: The Magic Art of the Great Humbug [How to do Things with Words] explores how words and thoughts as expressed in various children's literary works, have the power to affect children. Chapter Five: Theaters for the Imagination [What words can do to you] also explores the power of literature on children.

My major criticism of this book is in the lack of comprehensive representation of major children's authors [which I admit is difficult under the constraints of space etc] or authors whose works have had significant impact on children [e.g. Enid Blyton whose works had a huge impact on me as a child, Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit tales etc.]

I loved the Appendix which had a compilation taken from the works of noted authors on how books have a transformative power [e.g. Frances Hodgson Burnett, Graham Greene, Eudora Welty, Gustave Flaubert, and many more]. There is an extensive Notes section as well as Bibliography, and an Index.

On the whole, I gained a couple of useful insights into the pull of literature and it's impact on children. It definitely makes the case for reading to children, something I'm passionate about. I feel this book is valuable to parents, teachers, librarians and anyone involved/interested in encouraging reading in children.

Groundbreaking, important & personal.
By Jerry Griswold
A valuable book for scholars and the intellectually inclined parent, "Enchanted Hunters" is Maria Tatar's best offering to date. Sliding sideways from her solid scholarship on the fairy tales, Tatar has entered the field of Children's Literature Studies by means of the topic of reading and done something original and precedent setting. Those ready to go beyond the orthodoxy of the Jacqueline Rose Cult will find here new ways of examining childhood experience, as well as the perfect pitch of an authorial voice that is warm and personal. In literary scholarship, this book is the equivalent of the perfect string quartet.

Why Do Children Lie About Reading?
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
Maria Tatar, a professor of German who has worked heavily in German-language fairy tales, became curious about the phenomenon of "bedtime stories." The idea of reading children into sleepiness makes little sense; she writes: "Nothing keeps you awake like a good story." How, then, do children consume stories? Given access to books, kids read voraciously, tell one another stories, play make-believe, and enact impromptu plays. Stories are endemic to childhood.

Children find themselves pulled between conflicting forces, the eat-your-spinach wholesome reading grown-ups demand, and the deep, sensory experiences of stories they actually seek. As Tatar notes, children read with great aplomb, disappearing into books because they love the experience. And "experience" certainly describes it: kids embrace books that create rich sensory detail and muscular action. Children have opportunities to enjoy reading as grown-ups, with jobs and mortgages and responsibilities, cannot.

Presumably, the reading experience, which elides unnecessary content, feels more real and intense than ordinary life, with its long, inactive stretches of workaday banality. Children, who lack lived experiences, become seasoned through their stories. Because reading lets us experience a range of pleasures--different identities, different time periods, different nations--we absorb it deeply, particularly when we don't have conflicting ideas or pressures attempting to limit and control our thoughts.

Knowing this, Tatar's overview of pre-Twentieth Century "children's literature" is downright chilling. In Tatar's telling, adult scholars once sought to stifle children's curiosity, numb their desire for experience, and reduce kids to mere moral instruments. Not for nothing did teachers foist "primers" on kids, a learning apparatus first devised for monastic devotion. The enthusiasm, joy, and wonder we associate with childhood, teachers once unabashedly strove to squelch.

Tatar lavishes praise upon writers like JM Barrie, of Peter Pan fame, or Wonderland creator Lewis Carroll, grown-ups who didn't have children of their own. Freed from responsibility for children's moral upbringing, they immerse themselves in what it means to be young. Carroll's colorful, nigh-psychedelic otherworld, and Barrie's adventurous utopia, transcend age, era, and nation. No wonder their Victorian fairy stories retain massive, imitative popularity generations later.

Consider the "literature" adults insist children should consume. From the highly moralistic parables in elementary schoolrooms, to the belletristic art writing favored in high school and college courses, it's hard to imagine writing more incisively designed to alienate avid readers. Twenty-some years removed from 11th Grade English, I've finally begun appreciating Hemingway's and Fitzgerald's true accomplishments; but reading because we're "supposed to" generates a dry, joyless experience.

No wonder authors frequently dismissed as "young adult" writers, like JK Rowling and Suzanne Collins, have dedicated adult audiences. Their immersive storytelling is essentially bilingual, having both the sensory, theatrical content children love (and adults too, if we're honest), and the subtlety and nuance adults seek. Seven-year-olds, seventeen-year-olds, and seventy-year-old can all lose themselves in Harry Potter, while having unique, sophisticated experiences appropriate to their age range.

Yet, in perhaps Tatar's most telling passages, children feel openly guilty about reading. Besides her own students, Tatar cites influential sources, from Samuel Taylor Coleridge to Robin Williams, on this duality: making and consuming stories is children's greatest joy, but we mock "introverts," "addicts," and "bookworms" for reading. Some never outgrow this. Tatar quotes Oprah Winfrey recounting her mother berating her for "think[ing] you're better than the other kids."

No wonder adults shift reading energies onto other tasks. From work addiction to family responsibility to even just reading books they "ought to" read, adults divert their attention to putatively useful purposes. Yet Tatar notes adults read to children, at least partly, to recapture that intense "theatre for the imagination" they remember from childhood. I suggest grown-ups read paperback romances and spy thrillers (essentially grown-up fairy tales) for similar purpose.

Tatar recaptures the way we read during our childhood, seeking sophisticated experience and sensory richness, not intellectual heft. Whether society steals it (as I believe) or our psyches cannot generate images internally anymore (as Tatar implies), we adults lose this pleasure in reading, and spend years of adulthood second-guessing ourselves. We intellectually seek meaningful themes and critical complexity, while longing to simply vanish into somebody's lavishly felt story.

Stories, Tatar declares, create the experience of childhood. Between the sensory pleasure of Wonderland, and the complex experiences kids only have vicariously, childhood remains the unique domain of stories. And while Tatar doesn't craft a writing guide for children's literature, nor a discursus on adulthood reading, her message lies behind every grown-up's reading experience. We spend adulthood seeking to rediscover that wonderful, magical story.

The MUST-HAVE book on Neuromuscular Massage Therapy!
By Amy
If you're going to learn Neuromuscular Massage Therapy, this is one book you HAVE to have! Jocelyn Granger founded the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy ([...]), one of the top massage schools in the country and has been practicing for close to 30 years. This woman KNOWS HER STUFF!! I have personally been taught by her and she is the best. This book should tell you everything you need to know (and then some) about all the different techniques involved in NMT while teaching you the anatomy of all the muscles involved--attachment points, trigger points and so on. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find information as comprehensive and thorough as in this book (unless of course, you were a student at AAIMT).

I'm an LMT interested in specializing in this therapy and I found the book to be structured in such a way I found the concepts easy to follow and most of my questions were answered in this text. A must have if this is your field of interest.

Mount Pleasant: The Victorian Village (Images of America), by Mary-Julia C. Royall

Mount Pleasant: The Victorian Village is an intimate look at like in the area of the town now known as the historic district, during the slower-paced time before World War II. Called "The Village" by its citizens, this close-knit community along the edge of Charleston harbor was formed when five small English settlements merged in the nineteenth century to create the town of Mount Pleasant. The small town had its own identity and remained a "Victorian Village" due to its isolation from the outside world except by ferry. Rapid growth and change began with the opening in 1929 of the Grace Memorial Bridge over the Cooper River. The bridge linked cities to the north and south via Highway 40 (now 17), thus opening the door for tourism and commerce while creating local accessibility to Charleston.

In January of 1913, South Georgia State Normal College opened in Valdosta, Georgia, with three students who paid $10 a year for tuition and $12 per month for food and board. Colonel W.S. West donated land for the campus to the state, the Georgia Senate allocated $25,000 to the school, the city of Valdosta raised $50,000, and Richard Holmes Powell was chosen as the school's first president. From 1926 through 1977, Route 66 carried millions of travelers from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Pacific Coast. Americans fell in love with the automobile and made a family tradition of the road trip. On its three different alignments through the capital city of Springfield, Route 66 took motorists around the Illinois State Fairgrounds, past the state capitol, and through Abraham Lincoln's neighborhood. Mom-and-pop motels, gas stations, and eateries opened along the highway and became familiar landmarks to travelers in the "Land of Lincoln." In Springfield, the "horseshoe" and the "cozy dog" became popular local foods, and one of the first drive-up window restaurants opened. A man spent 40 years on Route 66 operating his gas station before transforming it into an internationally known museum. Meet the proprietors of these businesses, witness the growth of the highway, and enjoy a generous dose of nostalgia.

Interesting resource for Springfield
By Robert W. Stowe
This is an interesting resource for pictorial resources from Springfield, Illinois. Also for Route 66 memorabilia. I found pictures in it from my childhood years in Springfield... one from Allis Chalmers where my father worked before it was bought by Fiat. Cannot judge interest by those not familiar with Springfield and surrounding area.

In his early twenties Choukri takes the momentous decision to learn to read and write, and joins a children's class at the local state school in Tangier. When not at school he hangs out in cafés, drinking and smoking kif. Some nights he sleeps in a doss-house, but mostly he sleeps in mosques or on the street. He befriends many 'lowlife' characters, while the café habitués help him with his Arabic and the local prostitutes take him home, providing some human solace. Choukri's determination to educate himself, and his compassion for those with whom he shares his life on the streets is heartfelt and inspirational. 'As a writer, he is in an enviable position, though he paid a high price for it in suffering.' Paul Bowles 'Choukri's irrepressible, ultimately indomitable spirit is most touching and human.' The Independent 'Choukri is a powerful teller of stories. His telling of oppression is vivid and remarkable.' Morning Star

From Publishers Weekly
When this autobiographical work opens, the 20-year-old narrator is desperate to leave his knockabout life in Tangier and attend school. Although the thread of his search for an education runs throughout the book, that subject is overshadowed by tales of getting drunk, sex with prostitutes--a grim recounting that is saved from tawdriness by the narrator's cool, distanced voice. The chapters are more like a series of biographical sketches than parts of a whole: one describes Qasem, a man driven mad by his close relationship with his mother; another shows prostitute trying to support her mother and child. The translation is occasionally too slangy; still, Choukri's strange divided existence--half as an overage student, half as a devotee of bars and brothels--makes for compelling reading. Sections on the narrator's deteriorating relationship with his family are particularly moving. Only when his mother dies, does he discover that his father has been dead for months. No one, it turns out, informed him, "`Because we knew that you never got on with him.'"

Review
'Choukri is a powerful teller of stories. His telling of oppression is vivid and remarkable.' --Morning Star

From the Back Cover
This is the story of Mohamed Choukri and shows how throughout his trials and vicissitudes, two things shine through: Choukri's determination to use literacy to rise above the cruel hand fate has dealt him; and his compassion for the normally despised human beings who share this life of 'the lowest of the low.'

A very poor translation of an important book
By A Customer
Ed Emery, the translator of this book, has taken astonishing liberties with it, so much so that it is rather a rewriting than a translation. Whole chapters that appear in both the Arabic and the French are simply left out. And that is just the beginning. A very poor translation of what, in the original, is an important book.

The reviewer who says that Ed Emery is the translator of this book must be mistaken, or else Amazon is giving the wrong translator. I understand that Paul Bowles is the translator.

Excellent Reference Manual
By Robert Stinnett
How many times have you been trying to find a particular command but just can't remember what it was called. How many times have you been typing in a command and forgot the options available?
Through this book, the author has taken many of the substaintial commands for users, admins, networking and programming and rolled them into a dictionary of sort for Linux users.
Sure, you can find out a lot about any command through the online man pages, but the author has taken the somewhat cryptic man pages and broken them down into simple, to the point, references laid out much like you would expect to find in a dictionary.
In addition, you'll find handy reference manuals for common utilities, such as emacs, vi, CVS, sed and awk. While each of these could fill a book in themselves, the author has broken them down to the bare basics to help you get up and running and understand basic operation of each.
All in all, a wonderful reference manual that will compliment more in-depth manuals on actual use and administration of a Linux system.

Is just what is should be
By Benjamin Rossen
If you understand what "in a nutshell" means, then you shall be pleased with this book. It is not a tutorial, it is not a beginners' guide, it is not a theory book... it is a reference book, featuring entries that are succinct, to the point, sparse in places, but complete in breadth and indispensable.

I don't use Linux for my work station (Mac OS X) or for my servers (BSD UNIX) and so when I need to do something on a Linux box the UNIX commands at my fingertips sometimes don't work; then I turn to this book. Very handy.

Your IT tool box would be empty without it
By Norman V. Bauer
I have used Linux (nearly every major and some minor distributions) and I cannot tell you how many times this book has saved me. It is also great because a huge percentage of the commands covered also work just fine in UNIX (though I recommend UNIX in a nutshell too. I also have never bought a book from O'Rielly that was less than top notch. If you are a newbie or want to learn Linux in general BUY THIS BOOK WITH ANOTHER BOOK. Like all of the ....in a nutshell books it's reference book not a read cover-to-cover book....

A Fine Day for a Hanging: The Real Ruth Ellis Story, by Carol Ann Lee

In 1955, former nightclub manageress Ruth Ellis shot dead her lover, David Blakely. Following a trial that lasted less than two days, she was found guilty and sentenced to death. She became the last woman to be hanged in Britain, and her execution is the most notorious of hangman Albert Pierrepoint's 'duties'.

Despite Ruth's infamy, the story of her life has never been fully told. Often wilfully misinterpreted, the reality behind the headlines was buried by an avalanche of hearsay. But now, through new interviews and comprehensive research into previously unpublished sources, Carol Ann Lee examines the facts without agenda or sensation. A portrait of the era and an evocation of 1950s club life in all its seedy glamour, A Fine Day for a Hanging sets Ruth's gripping story firmly in its historical context in order to tell the truth about both her timeless crime and a punishment that was very much of its time.

A Fine Day for a Hanging
By S Riaz
From the very opening of the book, when the author takes us through the last day in the life of Ruth Ellis, this is a totally gripping account of a tragic life. Born in Rhyl in 1926, Ruth had a poverty stricken childhood, which left her with a sense of ambition and a drive to succeed. This book takes us through the years of WWII, when Ruth first enjoyed a level of freedom and the admiration of men. Unfortunately, the man she most admired and loved, a Canadian serviceman, turned out to be married and left Ruth a single mother. Undeterred, Ruth began to work in clubs and found that she was successful at what she did. After a failed marriage, she again picked herself up (this time with two children to support) and went back to work.

It is obvious from reading the life of Ruth Ellis that she was clearly the life of the party. She was soon not only working in a club, but managing one. However, she was also volatile and jealous. She began 1953 with a successful job; gregarious, ambitious and in control. Yet, this was the year she met David Blakely and her extreme love for him overshadowed her life from that point on. Carol Ann Lee gives us not only the biography of Ruth Ellis, but also that of David Blakely, and is always scrupulously fair in her account about both. Blakely was from a far more privileged background - his idea of 'being broke' was certainly not the real fear of poverty which Ellis knew all too well. Although Blakely was happy to move in with Ellis and to spend her money, he was also physically abusive and both his friends, and family, did not consider Ellis suitable for him.

This fascinating account of a crime which caused divided opinions and a huge outcry, both at the time and after, is related in great detail and with obviously meticulous research. We read of the crime itself and of the aftermath - the trial, how Ruth Ellis was viewed by the public and press and of how her death sentence helped change the law. There is no doubt that Ruth Ellis killed David Blakely, but certainly there are aspects of the case which would be viewed differently now. The author shows that this was, ultimately, a tragedy between two very damaged people and you can only view the unfolding events with both horror and sympathy. If you enjoy true crime books, then this is one of the best.

A Fine Day for a Hanging
By Damaskcat
I knew very little about the Ruth Ellis case prior to reading this comprehensive and well written book and I found it a totally absorbing read. The first chapter is one of the most powerful pieces of non-fiction writing I have come across for a long time. Ruth Ellis was the last woman to suffer the death penalty in the UK. There was never any doubt about the fact that she shot David Blakely outside the Magdala Public House in Hampstead. What never really came out in the police investigation or at the trial was the full circumstances which led up to the shooting.

Ruth Ellis was ambitious and wanted the best of life for herself. She moved to London and obtained work in clubs as a hostess. She did well and was managing the Little Club in Brompton Road in her early twenties. She was the sort of person who was ideally suited to the job as she always made people feel welcome and could talk to anyone. Ruth was married to George Ellis and had two children – Andre (George was not his father) and Georgina – but the marriage was always troubled and Ellis was an alcoholic and beat Ruth up. They separated and Ruth was living in a flat above the Little Club with Andre when she met David Blakely.

David was the sort of person who would always attract Ruth – he was unreliable, had ambitions of being a racing driver and was above her in the social scale which was something which mattered more in the nineteen fifties than perhaps it does today. David and Ruth’s relationship never did run smoothly and they frequently had rows and often split up only to be reunited a few days later. Ruth blamed David’s friends Ant and Carole Findlater for many of their problems because they did not like her and, she felt, were always trying to split them up. Eventually David became so jealous of Ruth’s job at the Little Club that she was forced to give the job up together with the flat which went with it.

Things never ran at all smoothly after that and in some ways it could be said that the death of one of them was always on the cards. But until Ruth shot David the odds would always have been on David killing Ruth because of the savage beatings he used to inflict on her. Even though the case was apparently clear cut – many witnesses saw Ruth shoot David and an off duty policeman was on the scene within seconds as he had been drinking in the pub – the police investigation left a lot to be desired. No one really investigated where the gun came from or who gave it to Ruth. The gun was not even checked for finger prints. Ruth’s own movements were never really traced over the whole of the Easter weekend which led up to the shooting. The role played by her friend, and sometime lover Desmond Cussen in the events immediately before the shooting were virtually ignored by the police.

Ruth Ellis was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in a trial which lasted an incredibly short space of time and involved very little attempt by the defence team to try and explain Ruth’s actions or the nature of her relationship with David Blakely. The case aroused a huge amount of controversy at the time and fuelled demands for the abolition of the death penalty. Today it is arguable that Ruth would have been able to plead diminished responsibility because of David’s beatings and infidelities and would possibly have been convicted of manslaughter rather than murder. Ruth herself felt her sentence was justified and in spite of strenuous efforts on the part of her solicitor a reprieve was not secured.

The book raises some interesting questions about how a defendant’s lifestyle, morals and appearance affect both a police investigation and the result of a criminal trial. Ruth’s platinum blonde bleached hair was what people remembered about her not the abuse she had received at the hands of the man she killed or the way she was manipulated by people who were supposedly her friends.

I had not realised until I read this book that Stephen Ward, who later achieved notoriety in the Profumo scandal, was probably acquainted with Ruth Ellis as they moved in the same circles. The people involved in her trial are also famous names – Christmas Humphreys for the prosecution. Aubrey Melford Stevenson, Sebag Shaw and Peter Rawlinson for the defence and Mr Justice Havers the judge.

This book is an excellent example of true crime writing and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know about this case. There are comprehensive notes on each chapter, a bibliography and an index. In the e-book edition the illustrations are in a separate section at the end of the book and they display well on the Kindle screen.

Revelatory, sobering and moving account of landmark case
By Robert H. Smith
One of the most shocking aspects of Ruth Ellis's crime, arrest, trial and execution is that everything occurred in a matter of months, a world away from prisoners sitting on Death Row for decades as appeals wend their way through the court system (at least in the United Sates). Even more shocking is encountering the awful power of Great Britain's Royal judicial system at a time when both gender and class seemed to play almost as significant a role in affecting a defendant's guilt and punishment as the circumstances of the crime itself. Carol Ann Lee's excellent account of the life, times and hanging of Ruth Ellis is a must-read for anyone interested in not only one of the most famous true crime stories in British history, but in learning about the life of a woman whose personality and feelings have been subsumed by the notoriety of her crime and execution. Lee's vivid and evocative descriptions of Depression era and post-World War II Britain, her empathy for (but not excusal of) Ruth, her perceptive sketches of a wide and fascinating cast of characters, and her concern with the wide ripples that so affect anyone connected with the principal figure in a major crime case make this a book that is well-organized and crafted, enormously interesting, and, ultimately, very moving.
