Danville, created in 1824 as the county seat of Hendricks County, was the hub of government, commerce, and agriculture. Farmers sold their crops in town and shopped there. As the agricultural economy diminished, Danville became home to workers commuting to Indianapolis. Danville residents have always valued education. On May 10, 1878, at the instigation of Prof. W. F. Harper of the Central Normal School of Ladoga, 50 farm wagons from Danville arrived at Ladoga and stole the whole school, including equipment, students, faculty, and baggage. Central Normal College was then installed in the facility previously housing the Hendricks County Seminary and the Danville Academy. From 1878 to 1951, Central Normal College was a Danville institution, turning out more than 75,000 graduates destined for leadership roles in education, business, law, and politics.

About the Author
Jeffrey K. Baldwin is a lifelong resident of Danville and has engaged in the civil practice of law for 30 years. He is currently president of the Friends of the Hendricks County Historical Museum and is involved in numerous other community, church, and political organizations. Baldwin received his law degree from the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis and his bachelor's degree from Ball State University with majors in political science and history.

Proud Son Introduces his hometown

This Book, one of many in the Images of America Series, is a delightful look at small town America. It is easy to see that Mr. Baldwin is a proud son, sharing his beloved home town with others. As the author states, this book is not intended to be a comprehensive history of Danville, but instead, it gives the reader a basic understanding of Danville, and how it came to be. It is seen through the eyes of someone who is proud of the deep roots of the families in this agricultural community. History abounds in this mere glimpse into the past. It left this reader wanting to discover all Danville has to offer for themselves. The description of the community in this book is almost like a warm invitation inviting others to share it's traditions. It left this reader thinking this would be a wonderful place to raise a family.Danville

My family was from Danville. My father grew up in the house on Clinton St. that his grandfather built in the 1800's. He was home on leave from the Navy on Good Friday of 1948 when the tornado hit town. He helped some of the injured people. When he returned to the Navy Base they threw him in the brig because he had blood on his uniform. They thought that he had been in a fight. When they found out about his good deeds during the tornado, they made him a hospital corpsman. It was interesting to read about the history of my dad's home town.
