I purchased this book along with Santa Paws 2 for my grand-daughter at Christmas, these books were on the top of her Christmas list. She loved Santa Paws 1. Very cute stories for kids who love to read and very nice illustrated pictures !!!

A walk through history...somewhat

Having lived in Maywood in the later 60s through the 70s, I found this book very interesting. I enjoyed all of the history, and wonderful vintage photos presented. However, I remember vividly having seen a fantastic array of pictures, portraits, and photos on display at the Maywood Public Library when the town celebrated its centennial and many didn't seem to be represented in this book. There were street cars, horse drawn wagons, and some wonderful houses. The one I lived in was built back in the early 1900s itself. Perhaps the author thought it would make for too long of a book? I can't say, but I think it would have been that much more interesting to put more on Maywood's first fifty years, as opposed to its later (and more recent) history. I have seen other books of the series and that seems to be more of the approach in them.

An awesome book!

I received this book yesterday, and must say that I was very pleased with it. I grew up in Maywood in the 1970's. I was surprised to see so many pictures. I'm also glad the author identified the street address of each house. Who knows, some day I may be able to go back and look up each building. I was surprised to see pictures of my high school (building in progress) and an earlier version of my grade school. I also like the famous Maywoodians chapter. An excellent book!

Images to Spark Your 'Remembrance of Things Past'

This is an excellent primer for anyone interested in Maywood or the suburbs of Chicago; the evocative images will inspire some (like me) to dig deeper for more images and cultural details. Deuchler's book was recommended to me while visiting the Maywood Public Library and for those who do wish to 'dig deeper' the library should be your first stop. Having grown up in Maywood in the '60's, I was hoping to see more images from that era, but there are certainly enough to unleash countless memories and, again, inspire further research. A great book to begin the quest!

The Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas will host an autograph reception and panel discussion on the history of Las Vegas in postcards on Friday, May 8, 2009.



Authors Lynn Zook, Carey Burke, and Allen Sandquist have compiled Las Vegas, 1905 – 1965 [Arcadia Publishing, 2009], which details the history of the city through hundreds of black-and-white postcards, from its post-auction beginning in 1905 to the height of its golden age as a resort destination in 1965. Few who know Las Vegas today will recognize its agricultural roots in images of the Stewart Ranch, the shady neighborhoods that grew up between the world wars, or the small, unpretentious motels and auto courts once scattered around the city. Las Vegas’s resort industry matured during the 1950s and ’60s, and postcards from the book reflect the mid-century modern elegance of such vanished hotel casinos as the Hacienda, Desert Inn, and the New Frontier.



All three authors grew up in Las Vegas. Zook, founder of the history website classiclasvegas.com, has long been preserving her hometown’s story through oral histories and panel discussions. Allen Sandquist, a photographer whose images of Las Vegas have been widely published, and Carey Burke are both avid collectors of Las Vegas ephemera and memorabilia. The postcards in Las Vegas, 1905 – 1965, were culled from Sandquist’s and Burke’s collections, as well as from the archives of the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas.



Zook, Burke, and Sandquist will autograph their book at the museum from 5:30 – 7:00 pm, and will discuss their project afterward from 7:00 till 8:00 pm. Refreshments will be provided by the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas Volunteer and Docent Council.



The Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas is located at 700 Twin Lakes Drive in Lorenzi Park. The museum is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. General admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors 55 and over, and free to children 17 and under.

The Department serves Nevada’s citizens and visitors through cultural and information management, presentation and promotion of cultural resources, and education. Lynn M. Zook is a noted historian, preservationist, and filmmaker dedicated to preserving the 20th-century history of her hometown through her Web site and blog. Allen Sandquist, a Las Vegas photographer, has collected postcards since he was a young boy. Carey Burke is a lifelong collector of Las Vegas ephemera, including postcards, pictures, and menus.

Las Vegas 1905-1965 Postcard History

This book would have been one of the "Best Books" on Las Vegas history, postcard wise, if only half of the postcards had been printed in color. The cards shown in this book are "Unbelievable" in color, as I have several in my own personal collection. The reader of the postcard history is cheated by the lack of color. I also found some of the cards didn't contain a street address or street name for the building shown. While I can recommend this book for some I was really let down when I found that the postcards lost most of the "WOW" factor when they are printed in black and white. I know color cost money but it would have been worth the extra cost. I hope that this book comes out later on with most, if not all the cards in Full Color. It will then be a, "I must have in my collection book".

A Fresh Perspective on Las Vegas History

To many of the casual viewers of Las Vegas history, it is a tale of tawdry gangsters and gambling. That is an undeniable element of the town's past, but, as this collection of vintage ephemera shows, these postcards featuring the former and current landmarks of mid-20th Century design in the city show the American imagination at work and play. What makes this collection and the activities of the Classic Las Vegas historians so effectively touching is that this shows how the rascals, roués, and just plain folks (whose hard work made the glitter sparkle) lived and built this corner of the American experience in the desert.

There is a charm to the small scale, highly innovative and, sadly, often long gone buildings featured on the post cards in this book. They focus on the casinos, bars, restaurants, but the best of all are the people, in all their sepia-toned glory. Great job, Ms. Zook and friends.

Good story; poor technology - now fixed!

EDIT: I've received word that this has been fixed. Downloaded a new copy and I see that all the ones I had bookmarked have been corrected. Thanks for that!

I really like the storyline. Zahn has put together a gripping story that sucks you in and makes you want to find out what's going to happen next. Highly recommended!

However, the publisher has done it a great disservice. Typos are all over this book - it reads like they took the original print version, ran it through OCR software, and then never bothered to fix the typos that introduced. "Who needs copy editing? Just push it out there and make that money!" It's like the publisher in "Elf" who signs off on printing a book with two missing pages. Who's going to notice something small like that?

Well, I noticed and it's really, really annoying. Yes, it's "only" the Kindle edition, but take some pride in your work and show some respect for the author's vision!

Zahn's Best Work!

This and the Spinneret book are Zahn's best (he eventually lost me in the Cobra series & Coming of Age). This is action-packed and suspenseful. The Blackcollar, with their super-human reflexes were man's last hope against the alien invaders. This is the story of their guerrilla war against that enemy - and their human nemesis, Galway, who is attempting to prevent the Blackcollar from doing greater damage to mankind than has already been done by the aliens. Excellent.

Hard-hitting military science fiction.

I often find myself disappointed by Timothy Zahn, especially with the inordinate time he spends with fantasy and Star Wars themes. His major contribution to military science fiction writing is via the creation of the Blackcollars and the Cobras. These display Timothy Zahn at his best with convincing plot lines, well-developed characters and interesting stories which make for page turning anticipatory reading. The best recommendation I can offer for Blackcollar is that I own the series. Definitely five star material.

Their work illustrates how post-9/11 literature expresses an ethics of equivocation—in formal elements of narrative, in a complex scrutiny of justice, and in tense dialogues linking this fiction with the larger political landscape of the era. Through a broad historical and cultural lens, Plotting Justice reveals links between the narrative ethics of post-9/11 fiction and events preceding and following the terrorist attacks—events that defined the last half of the twentieth century, from the Holocaust to the Balkan War, and those that 9/11 precipitated, from war in Afghanistan to the Abu Ghraib scandal. An excellent material on cybercrime

As the editor said, this book is not a continuation of Technocrime: Technology, Crime and Social Control, but instead it can be read separed and, the best option, in conjunction. This book has excellent empirical and theoretical material on cybercrimes and technocrimes with case studies, cops' accounts, and so forth.
